Just got back from a camping trip in Central Idaho. Had to drive my poor Jetta over a very bad road for 11 miles while my parents followed comfortably in their T-reg. All the while i was just hoping for the day i could get this bad boy with 4Motion, Manual (or at least DSG) and maybe Diesel.
Well, all hope is lost for that. I am one customer who would use it off road, and without those features i'm not sure i'm still going to be in the market.I'm really surprised they are offering all those choices in Europe and not here. I guess it shows that VWoA is really out of touch with US. It makes me sad, it really does....

First, we don't know which auto tranny will come with it. Remember that VW brands DSG as an automatic with tiptronic. Second, it sounds like they have the US market pegged to a tee. You are clearly an outlier. I'd bet that 99% of the cars sent here would never see so much as a dusty parking lot, and the ones that do go off road likely wouldn't want a manual.

not sticking with the first steer thing eh?

As mentioned in another thread, I would give serious consideration...BUT...I would have to have a manual diesel to consider it...AWD/MANUAL/DIESEL hopefully the offroad version too...doesnt look like it'll be happening. Thanks...once again...VW.

Here, the 170Hp version of the TDI will only be available with a manual.

I'm with you. I want a VW replacement for my Jeep Liberty, but AWD/Manual and 5K towing are a must.

Companies have to federalize each drivetrain variation, which costs a lot of money.
VW has clearly spent the money to develop all things people want, but our provincial North American rules make it unprofitable to sell those variations here.
If North America/Europe would simply standardize their myriad rules and regulations for bumpers/emissions/exterior lighting/so on and so forth we would get just as much variety here as they get in other continents.
I don't blame the manufacturers, I blame the government.

I'm susprised how utility the inside looks with the materials. Nowhere the quality of the Touareg, however I like it, reminds me of my 4Runner.

that that is the reason we were given as to why the R32 only came to the U.S. with only one transmission choice for both the MKIV and MKV, and it was mainly because of limited numbers.
The Tiguan isn't coming in limited (5000) numbers, it instead will hopefully be a successful addition to the VW lineup for many years to come. There are plenty of people out there who haven't bought a VW because they didn't have the choice the customer wanted. There are people I know who are seriously considering the Tiguan, but it needs to have AWD and manual transmission.
You would think it would be more profitable to sell a Tiguan to a customer that wants AWD and a manual than not sell that customer a Tiguan or a VW at all.

One could compare this to Mitsubishi's revised Outlander. Both are sport-utes that their makers need to stay in the US market. I must say, I have a fondness for VW (I like both the Golf GTI and Jetta GLI), and this compact sport-ute has given me another reason to hope for the nameplate's presence on this side of the Atlantic.
