Thanks to observant member Blag we found out that VW pulled a fast one on us: instead of publishing details about its new product as usual a quarter in retrospect, the new Jetta Wagen details are out in force:
Prices, and also all the specs and details.

As expected by most of us except the nay-sayers, the TDI is slotted between the 2.5 and 2.0T as (basically) an "SE" model, about $2,000 more than the 2.5, but less than the "SEL" 2.0T.

My only remaining problems at this point:

    - no fogs available
    - no regular sun roof available
    - no leather available for TDI
    - no automatic seats available for the TDI

... but I can live with that.

Also, it seems like the recent Diesel fuel price spike and silly EPA numbers are conspiring to ensure a good price for me. I must have done something right... (not invoking any Stone/Nepalese Karma here, in fear of a Chinese backlash over misunderstanding between Californian and philosophical usage...)

    seems quite reasonable

plus a $1500 markup most likely, high diesel prices or not.

sorry, that's the pessimist in me.

$25k for a TDI wagon 6-speed with a honkin' moonroof. Not "cheap", but a fine family car price.

By vague comparison, a '09 Forester X Premium with a similar honkin' moonroof and 5-speed manual is ~$23.2k. It has AWD, but not 40+ mpg.

The way I read the specs is that it is comparable in equipment to an SE model EXCEPT that it gets the SEL multi-function trip computer and the 6 speed manual transmission.

So I would call the price difference even less than $2000 more than the SE.

I think it will still not be a very cost effective manner about purchasing this car. With the price tag at 24k for base add on 1300 for the run roof and mark up. That 3k right there. Also add on taxes and fees, that another 2200. You are stuck with almost a 30k car..

Adding the SE-to-TDI $2,200 price difference to the sedan, that's a sticker of $22K-$23K. About what I expected.

I noticed the TDI gets a 6sp manual and DSG Tip automatic, versus a 5sp and non-DSG Tip auto on the SE. Plus a trip computer!

Now, if there's some way VW can offer a Rabbit TDI for $18K...

As much as I want a diesel wagon, that price just doesn't make sense financially to me. It would take me a long time to make up for the extra cost

Diesels are an average of 3 cents per mile less costly to fuel, they have better resale value, they can run biofuels, and they are considerably more efficient than the estimates tell you.

And it's not just about saving money. For crying out loud, if you look at a car merely as a financial proposition, you have no logical choice but to ride a bike. I find it mind-blowing that people are willing to accept an upcharge for sporting performance but not for other types of performance, such as fuel efficiency.

Trip computer, but no steering wheel controls?

    No 115V rear plug?

    No heated seats?

    Boo...

  16. 05-31-2008 10:11 AM #16
No heated front seats, I see that as a big shortcoming in the north east. Must have option on my wife's checklist.

The CL cracks me up sometimes. I remember reading complaints on how VW was loading up the previous year TDI models with too many toys and whistles and now it's complaints that it's not equipped enough. MAKE UP YOUR MIND.

Don't be an idiot. If you want a sunroof you have to pay to add that to the gasoline engined models too. You have to pay taxes and fees on the gasoline engined models too. Tell the dealers to shove the markup (some will) and you have a <$2000 charge for a very nice engine. Stop making excuses and admit you just don't like the car, which is fine.

Yeah, but $6000 more for the engine... and a bunch of other added content. Not $6000 more for getting a TDI, which is the point of the statement.

    Options would be nice

Oh and the 2009 Forester is now somewhat large, so its not a real comparision to the Jetta Wagon and competes in the marketed up small SUV market. Compare maybe the impreza 5 door (but that's smaller, huuuum)

I probably don't know what I'm talking about (but I know more than you)

Just saying what the reality is. As we have seen, these TDI models are skyrocketing in sales and very hard to get. So, even without the sunroof, 28k for a jetta seems ridiculous in my mind. Since when stating one's opinion on the net is wrong, You seem pretty hostile about this kind of ordeal. Chill out, it's just a forum with people having normal discussions.

Well for most people the whole point of buying a more fuel efficient car is to save money. People looking for performance are not as interested in saving money.

For the price though the upcoming hyundai elantra touring might actually be more interesting to me. I'll have to wait and see some final info about it though. I just don't see enough reason to spend $6-8,000 more on the diesel jetta wagon.

But certainly not for all. Personally, I could afford to buy a Tahoe, but simply choose not to.

Maybe that's part of the problem. Nobody thinks long term anymore.

A lot of quick fixes and band aids if you will.

I know I am going to be very careful with the next car I buy and look at a lot of variables. One of the things it won't be is a gas hog. If it's going to cost a little more, so be it.

In Canada, the TDI wagon seems to be a bit more flexible with options. There are three trim levels, and heated seats and leather are definitely available. I'm trying to convince my dad that this should be his next car. He was thinking Volvo V50 or Audi A3 but this is a much better value.

  33. 05-31-2008 11:46 AM #33
I found options and lack of them to be perfect for TDI. The price is very fare (I expected it to be higher). Now if only mpg will be around 40 miles on highway and 30 city I think I found a replacement for my Matrix.
The key option in a Jetta wagon imo is flat folding seats. As far as I was told Jetta has them. So flat folding seats + TDI + manual + fare price = my next car.

Heated seats are standard on Leatherette Jettas.
