Quote, originally posted by Autoblog » CarDomain recently sat for lunch with GM car czar Bob Lutz, and one of the topics that came up was the ever-vanishing manual transmission. Lutz explained that modern automatics are no longer the less efficient option by default, and with CAFE dictating so much nowadays, carmakers can actually lower their fleet average fuel economy more by going with automatics that can be programmed to deliver maximum efficiency (as far as the EPA is concerned, at least). He then went on to state that there will be manuals available in both the Camaro and the 2009 Pontiac G8 GT, which gets a 6-speed unit from Tremec. So if you waited on Poncho's new muscle sedan, your patience will be rewarded. Of course, your patience will also got you a price increase too, but at least those dopey digital auxiliary gauges will be gone, as well.

I hope he's not referring to the GXP or whatever the hardcore one is, because the normal V8 with a manual would be an incredible bargain and probably an overall better car on real streets![]()

If I could get a manual with the V6, I'd have one of these yesterday.

Saw that coming. Lemme guess - Tremec TR-6060?

Sarcasm relating to the constant cries of others for a 6MT after being told for months over and over again it was coming later, is all.

Saw my first one in Black on Tuesday...good looking car. Handsome yet aggressive

Any news on the overall sales of this G8? I don't see a whole lot of them around, but I know that GM was not planning on importing more than 50,000 or so. I hope that this car is meeting marketplace/sales acceptance. It really seems to be a great product, and GM should be encouraged to continue to use it's global resources (engineering, design, assembly).

A woman at the local Pontiac dealer somehow got my number and has been calling to beg me to come test drive one for the last... I dunno... two months.

for you.

Hmm...if this manual trans thing pans out, I may have to put my money where my mouth is. This of course depends on when it's available and exactly how much higher fule prices go, but I could be headed back to the pontiac dealer in a number of months.

Now that the 2009 G8 GT is priced over $30,000, I'm wondering if the manual will be cheaper and thus drop it back into the twenties. . .

This is great news! I got to sit in a G8 a week ago and was really impressed. It had the leather interior and I really dug the no BS, simple way it's designed. It has a unique character to it.

I've seen them in dealerships, but definitely none on the road.

will it have that 1st to 4th gear shift like the corvettes do?

Saw my first G8 on the road today. Have to say, not a fan at all.
they're steppin' on my rhythm and they're stealin' all my lines

That may have changed now that they're using the 6 speed auto though. It will be interesting to see.

So who here that said they will buy the manual?WHERE ARE YOU?

..They are waiting for the Astra Redline

as of june 13th, gm has not listed a 6spd manual in the print book for ordering....

I will take on in a second.I've driven one with AUTO. G8 is up there with its EURO competition.

Quote, originally posted by VarianceVQ » Sarcasm relating to the constant cries of others for a 6MT after being told for months over and over again it was coming later, is all. In fairness, there was talk that the GT wasn't going to get the manual after all, and that it would only be available on the GXP. So it's nice to be able to confirm that a manual is coming to the GT after all.

I'm not sure anyone actually said they would buy it, except maybe a couple of people. But people like myself, did say they would be very interested in the car if it was in a manual---which of course isn't the same thing as saying I would actually buy it. But when the manual becomes available, it will then be worth a salesman's time to get me behind the wheel. I think like most people, if the car ends up driving worse than expected, I'm not sure why such people would buy it. Afterall, a number of CL people did test drive the Astra and most were disappointed. Why would anyone buy a car they were disappointed with? To please the CL? GTFO!

Man, it will really be tough for me to say no to a G8 GT with 6MT.I have resisted driving it because I am afraid I will fall in love, even with the auto, and make a rash decision.
I really love the way it looks, and from the reviews the car sounds like a nearly optimal mix of sport and refinement.

I agree with you. If I had any justification for such a large car, I would have probably been on the waiting list for a GXP.
