Quote, originally posted by World Car Fans » Someday we’ll be driving computer chips and watching Powerpoint presentations on our in-car plasma screens. The latter is already well under way. Audi aims to be at the very edge of this in-car infotainment revolution and has MMI II to prove it. Launched in 2002, MMI (Multi Media Interface) was hailed as being more user-friendly than BMW’s iDrive system, although MMI has considerably many more buttons than iDrive, which sort of defeats the whole purpose of trying to simplify in-car function operations. A new version of MMI will now be offered immediately with A8, later A6 and then Q5. Improvements to MMI are quite numerous. A new TFT display with a resolution of 800x480 with LED background applies. The system comes with a 40GB hard drive, 10GB of which can be used to store music like in a jukebox – if you’re younger than 25 you may not know what I’m talking about here – the rest of which stores log book and satnav information. Speaking of satnav, the display can now show images in 3D using an Nvidia graphics processor which makes it even more realistic for the desperate traveller. This time under 25s will know exactly what I’m referring to as far as Nvidia is concerned. The highest-equipped version of MMI II is a B&O branded system. Other “normal” applications include Bluetooth which can be paired with your cell phone for that hands-free requirement, a USB port, auxiliary jack for portable MP3 players as well as the TV function where offered.

LOL @ their music selection.

wasn't the point to eliminate some buttons? Looks like there's about 100 around the shifter.

Anyone else think the headunit could use some work? It looks really awkward.

Either way, looks nice. The graphics seem really clear.

Most newer cars, including the Audi's, have some sort of integrated ipod functions, but what if you don't own an ipod? For instance, I have a Samsung K3. Would I be able to use it in the car the same as if it was an ipod?

thats why apple rules the market, they have more or less standardized the protocols for external control of their devices and released them to the after market industry (well, until recently when they've been getting greedy)basically when it comes to high level eternal control of an mp3 player apple has the rest beat

They do. I just thought it was an eclectic mix. I happen to like all the bands on that list (well, Genesis only sorta).

The NAV looks awesome. What would be really cool is if they could integrate a satellite view like on google maps or something similar...

I have experienced iDrive and it is very hard to use. I also think that there is no real use for MMI or iDrive or anything of such kind. What they both are, are glorified stereo head units and there is no reason to complicate the IO function (we all know how to operate a stereo).
Sometimes simpler is just better.

One of the guys in the Fantastischen 4 has driven the 24-h of the Nuerburgring a few times. One year I remember he was in a biodiesel powered Beetle TDI.

Quote » The system comes with a 40GB hard drive, 10GB of which can be used to store music like in a jukebox Something is wrong here. The RNS 510 unit in my car has 30GB of HDD space, 10 of which are used for the navigation maps and 20 for music storage so probably it is 10 for maps + 30 for music.
Even if they have dedicated 30GB to the maps because of the 3D city model display with texture, still it seams strange to have left only 10GB for music. It will not cost them that much more to use a higher capacity HDD.
Remember that BMW is introducing 80GB HDD storage in their cars (don't know how much Mercedes and Lexus use in theirs)

Gee ... just copy the music to the hard drive of the unit or use the AUX input the unit comes with.AUX connection is standart, the iPod one is optional and only if the car does not have a CD Changer.
