Thread: Best year of lego's

  1. 10-03-2008 11:38 PM #1
What would you say are the best year's of lego's? I say between 1986-1999. all comments welcome

  2. 10-04-2008 12:06 PM #2
I agree some what, alot of good sets this year, but some of the classics were the best.

  3. 10-04-2008 02:43 PM #3
don't get me wrong here. Those classic sets were awsome!

I'd say the lste 80's to early 90's pirates and castle sets were the apex of Lego. It sucks that all the sets are based off so many specialty pieces now. Although I have to admit, the new Indiana Jones stuff is pretty fun too.

That's in response to consumer demand, and seems to have started with the Star Wars line. Collectors wanted exclusive and unique parts to add to their collections, and LEGO needed a way to boost sales. Limited edition parts and colors seem to be doing the trick.

People always make comments like this but forget about all the specialty pieces that existed back in the 80s and 90s. We had plenty of special pieces like boat hulls, windscreens, rocket engines, etc.

There really aren't any more now than there were then. Most sets are a mixture of regular bricks and special parts, depending on the type of set.

I absolutely love the Star Wars sets. They are incredibly expensive though!

Legos are my favorite, I enjoyed the western stuff but i feelt that that was the start of big peices replacing putting small peices together.

i recently picked up a set of indianajones stuff and it simply isnt the same

I had this fire boat as a kid. In 1977.

The boat hull was made of large chunks.

Here's a Space set I had back in 1985. It has some big chunky bits in the center of it, as well as a bunch of special wing pieces and rocket engines.

    http://www.peeron.com/inv/sets/6891-1

Lego sets have incorporated large chunky pieces for at least 30 years. People like to say that the sets they had as kids were "only bricks" but it just isn't true.

However, Lego did sell basic buckets of bricks that people may have had as kids. And they still do:

The new Lego sets blow. They use half as many pieces and they just look stupid.

Early-mid 90's sets were the best. Airplanes, huge ships (remember Nautica??) Castles, space, aquazone, everything was just awesome and creative.

Its a sad day for Lego now...

    Sorry, again not true.

Come on, people, quit talking out your asses.

OMG <toys> WERE THE BEST EVER WHEN I WAS A KID BUT THEY SUCK NOW.

I don't know about you guys but I would have given my left nut for Star Wars lego sets when I was a kid.

I still collect lego's. Im a theme guy myself. Never got into technic all that much. Original lego dudes all the way. My favorite themes were probably Western/Indians. The late 80's, early 90's Pirates with the Imperials too are a close second. If I had to pick a newer theme, it would be the Mech/Endoskeleton stuff (almost too Anime-ish though) and the new Skeleton/Dwarf's/Castle stuff is pretty neat too!

You guys have seen the new VW Bug Model right? Its done really well.

Even though I have about 90% of the Star Wars sets, none of them come close to 88-93 sets.

I had, and still have this set.

I really liked the early Technics stuff, especially the early Pneumatic sets.

Technic now produces some really advanced sets that I would have KILLED for as a kid.

I had the Pneumatic Crane truck and the White 6-wheeled arctic rescue vehicle.

Yours truly at his Lego desk.

I have both of those cranes listed above...if you watch Lego.com closely, they blow them out at 50% off at the end of their retail life!

I have to say for Castle and Pirates, the 1988-1993 phase was the best.

All the sets I wanted but never got...

The new Castle and Pirates sets are IMO better than ever:

New Castle sets including humans, dwarves, skeleton warriors, trolls, and dragons: http://shop.lego.com/ByTheme/Leaf.aspx?cn=473&d=70

    New large pirate ship: http://shop.lego.com/ByTheme/P...n=554

This was one of the sets my parents bought in Bermuda back in the mid 70's. Way better then what was in stores domestically. Somewhere I have one of the first battery powered Lego trainsets too

I remember getting that when I was a kid! After spending a few hours building it, I just ended up mostly playing with the glow in the dark ghost, lol.

I had both of these as a kid!! Well I still do but they are in pieces. I used them on custom models I made

Model team and technic of the early-mid 90s were the best.

Maybe I should try a do a VW of some sort.
