Thread: Favorite car owned to date.

  1. 11-24-2008 06:49 PM #1
Lets start of cars owned and pick you favorite in terms in all around, comfort, power and over all driving experience. I'll go first.

Cars owned to date in order.

-1991 5.0 Mustang hatch, 5-speed Mint condition, loe miles, stock
    -1993 VW Corrado Slc

-1992 5.0 Mustang GT, Very low miles, (36k and flawless with many power upgrades.

    - 1993 Corrado Slc, Around 89k, Stock, excellent shape

    - 2002 Gti 337, leased new

    - 1991, 5.0 Mustang, Bones stock original owner bought car, one of the cleanest and unmodified I have ever seen.

-1995 Audi S6. Stock, 5-speed, after eight months of hunting found on a used car lot in Nj

    - 1995 E36 M3, Minor mods which included a chip, strut brace after market shifter, poly trans mounts. 5- Speed, Only 54k on the clock.

    - 2000 Acura 3.2 Tl, Former mothers car, who abused it for 100k before I got it, Still very reliable, not one problem since new, this is my current car.

And the winner is.... 1995 Audi S6, And I'll tell you why

The Ur-S4/S6 car are truly in a category of there own when it comes to comfort, drive ability, Bullet prof engine and trans, they go 275k no prob I kept up right. And unlike other cars that have been kept up with these kinda miles its like the miles have no effect whatsoever, They are true tanks. the AWD and lowered suspension over the the standard A6 Provided better grip in corners, even compared to the M3, call me nuts but thats just how it felt. The grip with AWD even in rain is unreal, Dump the clutch at 6k and no wheel spin, just go. The power delivery is simply amazing and when the turbo comes to life and goes into over boost mode the car feels as strong as any of the other cars i have owned. Thats in part to the legendary Straight 5cyl Turbo charged engine in the car, which is the stuff dreams are made of Never have I owned a car that you can jump in and drive for hours in total comfort and never get tired, you find yourself taking the long way home most nights just to drive the thing The motor can be modified very easily which I'm sure would put a smile on my face it would get stuck.. The stereo system is also unreal for a car of this age even by todays standards.

So their you have it my Number one pick the 1995 Audi S6 Turbo, AWD 5-speed. If I had to pick a second fav, one of my 1993 Corrados.

    Pic for clicks.

    87 Chrysler Conquest TSi
    97 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited
    89 Volvo 240DL
    87 VW Scirocco 16v
    85 Toyota 4Runner
    88 VW Scirocco 16v

My favorite is the 87 Scirocco. I fell in love with it the first time I drove it. It wasn't entirely "legal" so I took the back roads on the way home to avoid trouble. My route took me through a state park where there are no street lights and the roads are all gravel. It got dark and I got lost. The car had no bumpers, no grille, and all the speedometer was broken. I'm not entirely sure how fast I was going, but I reckon it was around 50-ish on gravel roads in the dark when I was lost. It was the most fun I've ever had driving a car, before or since. I found out later that all the bolts holding the suspension together were quite loose and about to fall off. But it still felt more composed and "tight" than any other car I'd driven.

The car in question the day after:

Favorite car is a toss up between the 87 RX7 and the 03 Cobra. Both are/were an absolute blast to drive. I'd probably have to give the edge to the Cobra though, because I'm not under the hood every other day fixing or adjusting something on it. Rabbit GTi gets an honorable mention.

Winner: 1991 VW GTI 8v; if it were a 5-door I'd probably still be driving it. Did no single thing perfectly but did everything all-around the best. It was probably the only car I've had where the whole was far more than the sum of its parts.

First runner up: 1978 Ford Fiesta; small, light, handled great, very fun to drive despite only 66hp (in a 1750lb. car you don't need much more). Actually in some ways as great as the GTI and just let down by 1970s reliability problems.

Second runner up: 2009 Mercedes SLK 300. Great power even for the base engine, quite good fuel economy for what it is, looks great, although has a host of "wtf?" design and equipment issues that make it infuriatingly frustrating for me to truly "bond" with this car.

Third runner up: 2000 VW Eurovan VR6 auto. Had this had a manual transmission it would have scored higher on my list (a MT minivan is ) and I might even still have it if it were the case. Immensely versatile and useful, not as horrible as people make it out to be, and all fun removed from the driving experience by a very "meh" slushomatic transmission.

Dead last: 1986 Hyundai Excel GL. Nice and clean Italian styling, decent equipment for the price, good looking for an econobox, great MPG, all completely negated by everything else.

    Cars owned:
1986 Mazda Rx7 base, Turbo II swapped - bought from original owner, swapped in T-II motor, built motor... blew Apex seal 30k miles later, traded it for the Cadillac:

1990 Cadillac Sedan Deville - Car was absolutely beautiful, perfect interior, only 90k miles, had flowmaster dual exhaust, dumped in the rear.... Awesome car, head gasket blew at 130k miles...

1989 Bronco II - I paid $75 for this truck, had no rear brakes, body was rusted out... I was off roading one day, and jumped a huge hill and slammed into a big ass tree... haha, Left it there.

1998 Ford Ranger - Bought this after parting out the Cadillac, I hated this truck the entire time I owned... 4.0l was a good motor, but had pretty much every suspension component fail on this truck within a year of owning it.

1994 Mazda Rx7- I saved money to buy this car for 5 years, I wasted my entire savings account on it, car had 20k miles when I bought it, blew an apex seal at about 30k, rebuilt the motor... blew another one at 40xxx miles... blew another one at 90k miles... I totalled this car while driving too fast in the rain, I miss it dearly, but I had so much money wrapped up in it, and only got $8k from insurance.

2003 Ford Mustang - Awesome, no problems with it ever.

1989 Jetta GLI - Traded for 1977 Jeeo
1977 Jeep CJ7 - Traded for 1996 Pontiac Trans am
    1996 Pontiac Trans am - traded for 2005 GSXR750.

Of all of the cars I've owned my Mustang is by far my favorite... I bought it out of necessity to get out of my POS Ranger... Realized how slow the 3.8 was...Started working on it immediately: 4.2L Heads, Cam, intake, Longtube headers, EGR delete, Pullies, and SCT Dyno tuned, 4.10 gears, built auto ready for boost... now its a relatively quick car for what it is, and it looks damn good. It is really the only car I have ever heavily modified... Coming soon is a ported Eaton M112.
My FD was my favorite drivers car ever... and looked and handled incredibly well, but 3 engines in 50k miles = no bueno for me, I was pretty happy when I totalled it, so I could buy something else.
    Pics:

Here is what it looked like day after I bought it... Its come a long way... I need to make some cash to buy tires for my Saleens.

My favorite so far has probably been my 2006 Mustang GT. When i first got it I kennebell supercharged it to 475wheel HP then I got bored with that and did full suspension agent47 double wishbone front end, saleen watts link rear, stoptech 4piston brake kit with 13inch rotors. Then I pulled the motor bored and stroked it to a 304 did full forged bottom end with comp cams from benspeed, a stronger temec transmission and to top it off ran full straight pipe no cats no muffler it now makes 444whp and will hang with just about anything out there on a twisty mountain road. When i get my 2011 i plan to turn my 2006 into a full track car and use my 2011 for daily driving.

    2004 Ford F-250 Diesel /w 6" lift, 36" tires
    2003 VW 1.8T

I miss the truck, mostly because it was the first time I really started to modify my own vehicle, and sitting up high like that was something else. Besides, I don't know if any of you guys have ridden in a twin turbo diesel that was chipped, but can you say torque? I also had dual 3.5" straight pipes coming off the headers... I could leave black smoke for a mile if I kept my foot on it. Ended up selling the truck due to diesel prices, horrible (10mpg highway) gas mileage traveling 40miles to work every day.

I haven't had any issues with my VW, and it's a blast to drive with the suspension, chip, and downpipe, but I just miss being over to run over everything, go fourwheeling, etc.

The 2nd corrado and the M3 are a close match but the m3 wins solely of the handling.

By far my favorite car to date has been the GTO, has all of the fun of the Z06 with all the practicability I need on a daily basis, the interior is a nice place to be in and the overall car is an excellent package.

Have owned only two cars so far, a 1.8 90hp Golf MkIII and now my BMW 320i with 150hp.

It is a tough choice for me. The Golf was very quick for only a 90hp car and very grippy. It was lots of fun to carve through the local backroads with that thing.
But the BMW wins, because the interior feels more solid and refined and because the rwd is loads of fun. And because it produces those yummy BMW 6-cyl noises.

    1980 Chevy Chevette
    1985 Honda Prelude
    1983 Porsche 911
    1983 Porsche 928S
    1983 Porsche 944
    1966 Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow
    2003 BMW 325i
    2003 BMW Z4 2.5i
    2007 BMW Z4 M Coupe

I've liked most everything I've owned. I was never fond of the Chevette, but it did it's job and got me through college and my pizza delivery years. The M Coupe has to be my favorite, though. The Rolls-Royce is runner-up. Both are very different cars, but owning both is/was an experience in itself.

I'd have to say it's a tie between my old '97 528i & my Genesis. I also really liked my 2006 Honda Pilot. It gave me no problems and felt like a much smaller/more nimble vehicle than my 2001 P38 Range Rover, even though excluding curb weight it wasn't.

Conversely, my least favorite cars were my 2002 Passat (very problematic) and my 2006 GS430 (highly overrated).

    Cars owned to date

1986 Austin Metro (aka the beige)
    1980 Ford Fiesta 1.1
1986 Ford Escort 1.3 Bonus (the bonus being that I barrel rolled it in the rain)
    1987 Ford Escort 1.1 (Slooooooooooooooooooow)
1985 VW Scirocco 1.8 (head gasket fried in 2 weeks)
1986 VW Scirocco 1.8 (timing belt broke in 2 weeks)
    1987 Escort RS Turbo
    1990 Peugeot 309 (shudder)
    1989 Escort XR3I
    1993 VW Cabrio
2004 VW GTI 1.8T (still in the garage)
    2001 Ford Focus ZX3
    2004 Jeep grand Cherokee 4.0

...favourite? the XR3I, definitely. I love the euro mk4 escort. perfect size. nice interior (for the time) and contrary to popular belief, when lowered could hang with its VW GTI peers all day long.

I owned both the RS Turbo (tuned, Koni's, etc etc) and it was FAST. especially for a 19yr old (140mph +) but needed constant care. tuning, expensive oil, expensive spark plugs and I was always worried it would go bang. But the XR3I while 100hp or so less, was just fun. it did 120mph on the stop, only does 0-60 in high 8's to 9's but you could just beat on it day after day and it wanted more. you could drive it like an absolute hooligan (and i did!) and it never snapped or didn't anything unexpected.

if it had come with the delicious Recaro seats in my RS it would have been perfect.

    2000 VW Golf 8v (ex-wife's car)
    1994 Ford F150
    1984 VW Vanagon (watercooled)
    1984 VW Jetta 8v
    1990 Chevy Corsica
    2007 Mazda 3s 5dr
    1990 Saab 900s 4dr (BABE 2007 car)
1984 VW Rabbit (current autocross car)*
1993 Mazda Miata (current daily driver)*
1996 Jeep Cherokee (current hauler/occasional DD)*

I'd say winner by quite a wide margin is the Miata.

The 135i is my 34th vehicle, so I'm not going to list them all.

Right now it is at the top of my list of cars, with the GTO a close second, but I haven't owned it long enough to say for sure.

Without a doubt it would be my '98 M3 with a close second my '85 GTI.

    1990 Mercury Cougar

140 Hp, top speed 82 mph...handled like garbage...and blew a headgasket in 12k miles...definitely don't miss that car...however I am suprised that I didnt total it considering I drove it like a douche wherever I went. RWD shenanigans ftw!!

    198? Plymouth Turisomo

Baby blue with a carbed motor and power nothing. I drove this during the winter of 2000 and parked in the waaay waaaaaay back of the HS parking lot. (not that I had any real automotive rep to maintain considering the cougar that preceded it...) This car was purchased for $1 as a stop gap before I was able to scoop my new wheels. Only had 35k miles on it though when I got rid of it. It was totally fun to thrash around on western pa winter roads. I kinda miss it actually...KINDA

2001 Nissan Sentra SE Performance Package

Got this car right around late winter/early spring my junior year in highschool. I worked at the dealer so I got a helluva deal on it too. It was white with the performance package and moonroof. The only crap part was that it was automagic. (mom's rules) However I still had SOOOO much fun in this car it was absolutely ridiculous. The import tuner scene was still in it's infancy in my parts (fast and the furious would debut the following summer) so my car was a unique fixture in the highschool parking lot due to the fact that it was tinted out and had an exhaust and intake. I was extremely proud of my i/e setup because it didn't sound ricey in the least. I actually consider it to this day to be the best sounding car I ever owned. It had that perfect intake/exhaust pitch and it was so throaty, not buzzy like any civic. I also had a stupidly loud system in it as well. (jettavr666 went to school with me, and he can attest to this) Got a ton of tickets in this car, and a few accidents. This car is the one that will be the center of all my "I remember when" stories that I tell when I'm old and senile. This car is probably the one that I hold most of my fondest memories of.

2003 Pontiac Grand Am GT SC/T

I had this car starting the summer after my freshman year in college. This car is what I refer to as my "oh that was YOUR car" car. By that I mean that everybody and their mom in my town seemed to know my car. That was because a few reasons. (1.) When I first got this car, I had THE only fusion orange grand am in the Pittsburgh area. 03 models weren't supposed to carry that color, but a few late builds made it through and mine was one of them. Fusion Orange didn't become rampant until well into 2004. 2.) My car had an slp exhaust added, 17 Chrome five spoke Eagle Alloys, tint, multi-function underbody orange led's...and a gloriously stupid loud (and CLEAR) stereo. People still talk about this car too this very day. I am proud of it because was definitely a hot ride for what it was, because it was unique and cleanly modded. It was a tail attractor too believe it or not. Unfortunately I only had it until the winter of 2004 when it was totalled due to fire.

    2004 Nissan Sentra SE-R...

I bought this car after the grand am was totalled...as I wanted to relive the experience I had with my SE sentra in HS. Unfortunately this car felt slower...didn't handle as well...and had more catastrophic engine failures (2) than I could have ever expected. Again I did put an intake and exhaust on (it did sound good when the secondaries roared) and a stupidly loud stereo...but there was nothing downright awesome about this car. It was just a vehicle to drive...which I did for 85k miles.

    2008 Cobalt SS Turbo-

Loving this car to death, it gets compliments...looks good...handles awesome...is stupid fast...and gets great mpg's. I have NO regrets about this car and I'm looking forward to many great years with it.

So which has been my favorite. I'd probably say the '01 sentra...as I had so much fun in that car. However...my Cobalt SS is now writing it's own chapter in the "did I ever tell you about that time" chronicles.

cars I've owned, starting with my first car:

    93 ford escort GT
    90 civic si
    76 volvo 265
    84 gti (currently own)
    94 golf
    84 jetta (currently own)

I really don't have anything bad to say about any of these cars, and I enjoyed them all.

I'd say its a tie between both my current cars as my favorites. This is actually kind of a bad thing, since I'm at a point in my life when I'd kinda like a "modern" car as a daily driver, but I can't bear to get rid of either mk1, and I can't justify a 3rd car

    I've had a few

    86 Saab 900
    92 Saab 9000 Turbo
    90 VW Jetta GLI
    95 VW GTI VR6 Turbo
    96 VW Jetta GLX
    98 VW Jetta GLX
    96 Jeep Cherokee

I would say my favorite was the 92 9000 turbo, but it was also my first car so I had a special attachment to it

hmm... well, I've owned two, but I drive four regularly so I'll use those.

    -1972 Super Beetle rust-bucket supreme($50 cars FTW)
    -1998 Golf 4dr
    -1956 Studebaker C-Cab pickup
    -1947 Studebaker M-Cab pickup

Of these, probably the 1956 Studebaker is my favorite. The ergonomics suck, the mileage is rubbish(18ish if you are really light on the loud pedal), and it's not very fast, but it looks and sounds like sex. The 1972 Beetle is a close second, though I only had it for a week before it broke in half while doing 40 MPH in the woods. Field cars are always fun.

    1998 VW Golf Mk.III 5dr/1960 Porsche 356B T5

    I dressed myself!

I wish I had never sold this car. It's gone way downhill since it left my hands

'02 WRX wagon (hers), '00 XJ, '70 Beetle (rusty and parked)
    11-24-2008 08:41 PM #33
    Owned:
    '70 Beetle
'84 Pontiac 6000LE (wife's car when we got married - crappy but dead reliable)
    '70 Ghia coupe
    '86 Nissan 2WD PU
'86 Gutless Ciera (awful - same car as the 6000, but really awful)
    '84 Scirocco
    '82 Scirocco
    '86 Cherokee (4.0 FTW!)
    '87 528eA
    '88 325
    '88 MR2 NA
'98 not-so-Grand Voyager (I think it's mentioned in the Wikipedia article on "feces")
'84 F150 (used-shingle-haulin' machine - with about 2500# in the bed and the nose in the air, most large boats steer better)
    '92 Pathfinder
    '89 Jetta
    '91 Previa
    '97 Suburban

Different vehicles for different purposes...in terms of a really nice car to just drive every day, the E28, hands down. The street legal go-kart? MR2. And the Beetle is my pick for a car that I would keep and drive forever if I had to (mainly because I still have it, 11 years later).

I haven't owned much I tend to stay with my cars for awhile but for now my 2 are:
1987 Ford Mustang GT 5.0 - money pit, way too much money into it
    1999 Audi A4 2.8 Quattro - daily driver

After winter the Audi is going and I'm getting a BMW 135i

The winner for my favorite would be my mustang right now just because of the power, but winner for most reliable, best driving would be my Audi.
