Thread: strut replacement

  1. 02-07-2009 12:24 PM #1
Is there anyway to remove the top nut for strut replacement that doesn't involve an impact gun? I'd like to swap suspensions with my mk3 but I swear it's imposible, I don't even care if the strut is no good as long as I can put it in my golf to roll it around my driveway

no money trying to do it this weekend. I mean the suspension in my jetta is okay. but golf has got a supersport kit and it would be nice to throw that on

drive your car to the closest mechanic near you, give him 5$ to zap the bolts off, drive home, install your new stuff, tighten them down as much as possible, drive back, get him to zap them on for another 5$ and call it a day.

PS> dont be a chince either, give the guy $10 to take em off even if he doesnt ask, that way when you go back he will prolly laugh and do it for nothin.

    Yes.

It's a 21mm or 22mm socket... grab a cheap one and grind two flats on it so you can grip it with a big crescent wrench. 7mm Allen wrench goes down the hole and prevents the strut from rotating while you crank on the crescent wrench to loosen the big nut.

All of the above assumes you've soaked everything in PB Blaster overnight and it loosens up... otherwise you'll twist the allen wrench into a pretzel, throw the crescent wrench across the garage, and end up tracking down an impact wrench.

I just got my friend to weld a socket onto a metal bar, and drilled a hole where the socket was. It works well!

I picked up an O2 sensor socket at autozone for under $10. Works perfectly with no modification.

The O2 socket idea is the easiest one out there - put a 1/2" breaker on it and stuff an allen socket down the middle to hold the strut and it'll come loose no problem.

there are 2 types of sockets - this is the type i'm talking about:

Yep, that's what I used. Worked great.

i managed to get the nut loose on the golf using a 22 mm socket vice grip and an allen key through the top. Didn't look like anyone touched the suspension in the jetta for years, just drilled it out since i really don't care about blown struts

bringing this back from the dead, rather than posting a new thread... is the 02 sensor method just for oem struts? or would it work on most aftermarkets as well? i'm trying to take the bilsteins out of the car i just got, and was all excited to find this thread saying it's just a 10 dollar part, but i realized that it seems the nuts on the bilsteins are 17mm? thanks in advance

for some really obscure reason, the nuts on my struts were 13/16, with a metric thread... I used a spark plug socket with an adjustable wrench and a long bar. Then you just stick an allen key in there with a 7mm socket and extensions to hold it. have a friend hold the allen while you turn the bar.

I've used that before, worked out great. I call them a "crow's foot." Not sure if that's the technical name or not, but thats the name I have given them.
