SAN CLEMENTE — Authorities have found a grenade on Interstate 5 in Orange County and have shut down the freeway in both directions.

California Highway Patrol Officer Eric Barnard said today that it was unclear whether the grenade in San Clemente was live or inert.

The Sheriff Department's bomb squad and Marines from Camp Pendleton arrived on scene to investigate.

Barnard says the grenade was discovered about 11:15 a.m. and authorities closed the freeway about 15 minutes later.

Motorists are being diverted off the highway at Avenida Vista Hermosa. Traffic is backed up in both directions for at least five miles.

Wondered where I left that damn thing.....

    Too much MW2 for you.....

Apparently it has been removed by a robot, so it is now safe to proceed to your usual I5 traffic jam.

Was it a real grenade, or like an actual running 1982 Cadillac Fleetwood with a V8 diesel?

Well, there was no explosion and a chunk of the I-5 missing...so while you can't say it wasn't live...it obviously still had the pin in it.

Ah, I was trying to think of a vehicle known to grenade. All I could come up with was the old Cadillac V8 diesel.. which was known to blow the heads off IIRC.

Based on the thread title, I was hoping for a really ugly chick standing in the middle of the road.

    It's annoying.

"So, you need to take, the 5 to the 880 to the 680 to the 405 to the 1."

Why do you all put the "the" in there? There is no need for it

How did they even find the grenade? Was someone driving by and thought, "Hey... that thing on the side of the road looks like a grenade?"

When I moved down here, that bugged me too. I'll catch myself saying it once in a while.

well its kinda like my buddy who drove past a cleared rollover wreck. There was a purple woman pleaser sitting on the side of the freeway next to the jersey barrier

Why? Because it's logically and grammatically correct, that's why ... This was once a many-page thread on Honda-Tech, with SoCal people attempting to explain it and the rest going nuts, until it was discovered that the REST OF THE DAMN WORLD uses "the" as well.

    Example:
    Incorrect - Take apple
    Correct - Take the apple.

    Incorrect - Take I-5
    Correct - Take the 5.

This happened in SoCal, so I fixed it .

San Clemente? That is just north of Camp Pendleton. I wonder if it fell out of some Marine's car just after leaving the base?
