For those TCL'rs that live in Hilo Bay, Hawaii:

I might suggest you leisurely walk away from the beach.

(1960 Tidal wave in Hilo came from earthquake just a few miles epicenter of today's quake in Chile.... and Hilo got ROCKED.)

They'll be fine. Less than 200 dead so far.

Far cry from Haiti's complete lack of preparedness...

For those that don't know where Chile is...

    And the epicenter.

Im hearing rumors about a trsunami hitting the Bay of Bengal in a few months . Even though 200 is a far less cry from 100,000.... they are still humans and it is a big lost to each family of this misfortune. RIP.

At first I was like "Damage looks serious, but nothing we haven't seen before."

Then I was like "8.8 is nearly 9.0! That's ****ing massive!"

Hopefully the damage and death toll isn't anywhere near what we saw in Haiti.

Hawaiians should be on the lookout for tsunamis.

    Get off my lawn.

Looking at the pictures available now and listening to CNN- they are saying many structures "disappeared", and that the hardest hit areas are on the coast and cut off from communications and access roads are blocked by debris (we don't know how bad they are yet.. no pics or reports from those areas yet even), which suggest to me that the actual death toll will be in the thousands (unfortunately).

On the other hand- the coast near the epicenter is very sparsely populated.

Population density is very low (less than 25 people per km) near the epicenter of this quake.

I can't wait for Pat Robertson to claim this happened because God was pissed at the Chileans.

It's been 12 hours since the earthquake hit off the coast of CHile. How long until any related tsunami hits Hawaii?

    4pm EST per the link.

And it's good to know the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center thing works.
Something good came from the Sri Lanka tsunami disaster.

One of the dangers of the modern world is that there are people basically everywhere. So if anything happens, it will affect people.

perhaps not Ohio, but before everyone gets too comfortable, I present the New Madrdi Earthquake of 1811

It affected 20 states back in 1811 and was considered by some to be close to 9.0

look up New Madrid earthquake of 1811... rang church bells up in Boston.

there was a "minor shake" of this system in 1895..

In the winter of 1811-12, the central Mississippi Valley was struck by three of the most powerful earthquakes in U.S. history. Even today, this region has more earthquakes than any other part of the United States east of the Rocky Mountains.
witnesses reported the ground rolling like waves on the ocean. with telegraph poles moving back and forth like ship masts on heavy seas.

The Mississippi River ran backwards and uphill and formed a new channel many miles away from it's original bed. (the mississippi is over a quarter of a mile wide at the point of the earthquake)

Felt by over 2/3rd's of the US in 1811

there's no need to be callous.

On that note though, this just displays the stark contrast between some kind of government combined with a certain level of building code vs a lack of government and construction code.

8.8 is a massive earthquake. They are saying it released 500 times the energy the Haiti earthquake did. Fortunately Chile is a very sismic area and most building are buit to withstand such things.

    agreed

the ramp up from an 8.0 to a 9.0 is 10 times the energy released.

So each 0.1 is double the energy from the previous

    "so far"

well, a number like 200 at this point is meaningless.

As with all things of this sort, the real numbers will be far greater.

Of course, one can always hope that this time it will be different
