For those that aren't aware (and this is mainly directed at canadians wanting a true european car) starting in 2009, you can legally import european cars into canada with no restrictions (unlike the present 15 year rule).

According to the NAFTA Annex 300-A, "Canada may adopt or maintain prohibitions or restrictions on imports of used vehicles from the territory of Mexico, except as follows:

(a) beginning January 1, 2009, Canada may not adopt or maintain a prohibition or restriction on imports from the territory of Mexico of originating used vehicles that are at least 10 years old;

b) beginning January 1, 2011, Canada may not adopt or maintain a prohibition or restriction on imports from the territory of Mexico of originating used vehicles that are at least eight years old;

(c) beginning January 1, 2013, Canada may not adopt or maintain a prohibition or restriction on imports from the territory of Mexico of originating used vehicles that are at least six years old;

(d) beginning January 1, 2015, Canada may not adopt or maintain a prohibition or restriction on imports from the territory of Mexico of originating used vehicles that are at least four years old;

(e) beginning January 1, 2017, Canada may not adopt or maintain a prohibition or restriction on imports from the territory of Mexico of originating used vehicles that are at least two years old; and

(f) beginning January 1, 2019, Canada may not adopt or maintain a prohibition or restriction on imports from the territory of Mexico of originating used vehicles."

So if you want that Pug 206 or Renault Megane diesel next year... you can.

Shoot me if this is a repost...

Has Germany ceased to be a part of Europe?

Ha.. ok ok... VW Polo's also qualify... as do Opels (albeit sold as Chevrolets).. mmm Corsa GSi. Something tells me the Canadian used car landscape is going to drastically change in the coming years...

What are the import restrictions into Mexico?

Because the way that reads, anything that's legally registered in Mexico can be brought into Canada, as long as it's 10 years old in 2009, and so on, so on.

I don't want to rain on anybodies parade but...

All the reviews I've read particularly about Seat and Peugeot is that the cars are crap. Yes, I'm like you and would love a car you don't see every day and some of the designs are very nice. I'd just do some research before you make a purchase.

That is all.

PS: Yeah yeah, you bet I'm jealous

reminds me of alfa romeos, a lot of people say they are junk, but here on the car lounge they are revered, the funny thing is 99% of the people that praise them have never actually driven them, they just like the looks. I think this applies to seats and peugeots as well

Um, my reading of it, there ARE restrictions. It wont be until 2019 that all restrictions will be lifted and by then I'm sure the rules will change.

(a) beginning January 1, 2009: at least 10 years old;

b) beginning January 1, 2011,: at least eight years old;

(c) beginning January 1, 2013: at least six years old;

(d) beginning January 1, 2015: at least four years old;

(e) beginning January 1, 2017: at least two years old; and

(f) beginning January 1, 2019, Canada may not adopt or maintain a prohibition or restriction on imports from the territory of Mexico of originating used vehicles."

It always struck me as odd that Quebec / Eastern Canada never got Peugeot/Citroen/Renault cars. These people seemed to be hardcore "Buy only French" products.

I definitely would have imported a diesel if this law was around a couple months ago...

Because it's a part of NAFTA, as the OP put it. And Mexico gets a lot of European cars, as direct imports. It's kinda sidestepping a direct route (which is still illegal) via South of the Border

No, no. That's not what I was asking.

Let's say there was a car that was over 10 years old, but under 15, and was never sold in Mexico, the US, or Canada. Let's say I lived in Mexico.

Could I import that car into Mexico? If the answer is yes, then, next theoretical question...

Now let's pretend I'm a resident of Canada. Some Mexican has this car that he imported from Europe, that's over 10 years old, but under 15. The way I'm reading this is that it would be legal to import that car, if it was in Mexico legally. Am I right, or does it have to be a Mexican-specification car?

Yes they did some years ago. Renault was VERY visible during the eighties. I believe that Peugeot was there as well until the early 90's when they pulled out of the USA as well.

Surprising to me that the Parti Quebecois didn't give generous MOT and EPA exemptions for the french makers .

How old does a car have to be so you can import it into the U.S.?

Because if it's 15 years... my 3000GT is a 93

No, Quebec people just like cheap cars and French cars happen to be cheap and good on gas.

But for the driving enthusiast, there's no way in hell I'm buying a POS French car.

21 for emissions, 25 for safety.

So, if the chassis, lighting, bumpers, fuel tank, and instrumentation all meet US standards, it can be imported regardless of emissions at 21 years old.

Renault Megane Diesel??

ROFL!!!

It isn't sold in Mexico, so even if they started selling it tomorrow you would have to wait a long time to be able to import it into Canada.
