German magazine Capital is reporting (google translation) that talks between Apple and Volkswagen are in an early stage for a so-called "iCar".
According to a Volkswagen company spokesperson, the two company heads held talks a few days ago in California on more heavily incorporating Apple products in Volkswagen's compact cars.
Apple already has a dedicated page for the integration of its iPod products into automobiles. Recently, Apple has worked with BMW for iPhone integration in 7-series models.
Note: The term "iCar" is said to be a preliminary designation for the project, much in the way that the AppleTV was first designated "iTV".
I think this has been reported before - I always thought these two companies (at least in the U.S.) were viewed similarly by consumers (slightly more expensive "high end-seeming" products)
It will/would be interesting to see. They would make a great team. (posting from my poseur ibook)

It's not a bad idea at all. It's probably not too far from common knowledge that a lot of Dubbers <3 Macs. I can't tell you how many Dubs I've seen with Mac apple stickers in the windows.

I dunno, it seems as though Nerds are more PC and Linux users since both platforms are great if you know what your doing and allow all kinds of customization options, not to mention gaming. Macs seem to appeal to those who just want something thats easy to use. Plus because of the Ipod kool-aid Macs are bought just for image these days.
Nerds would buy the car if it was running Linux or BSD-controlled telematics. Artsy types who wear turtlenecks, drink lattes, and wear berets use OSX. Get your stereotypes right.
/knows OSX kernel is based on BSD //semantics ///slashoooooooomatic!
Best case scenario: onboard nav system/computer built by Apple, with integrated Google tools. Think about it:
Your iPhone talks to the car wirelessly with Bluetooth, and the touchscreen display in the center console mimics all your phone's functions. Multitouch interface, with 3G Internet browsing, plus all your music, movies, and photos that are on your iPhone. And if they can get Google to get their act together and add a GPS function to Maps- hot damn this could be good.
It'll make iDrive and everything like it look like a Winblows box, circa 1997.
edit: To everyone in this thread who's been mouthing off about how "Nerds use Linux" and how "Macs are for hipsters who bought them for the shiny plastics": Go back to talking about cars. You have no idea what you're talking about, so stop embarrassing yourselves.

Wasnt there a thread a while back about Apple potentially designing a Nav system for auto use? I think rumor was Mercedes would have exclusive rights to it for one year...
Tyrone, when you reverse things come from behind you!
Apple Computers, in my experience, are the most reliable, longest lasting ones out there. I think Consumer Reports agrees too.
When I was in HS, we had a bunch of Mac computers for the journalism/yearbook classes. When they were all working properly at the same time it was a minor miracle.
Alright, I wanna know who's responsible for wrecking my town, Sheriff. I want his hood on a platter! I'm gonna put him in jail 'til he rots. No, check that... I'm gonna put him in jail 'til the jail rots on top of him then I'm gonna move him to a new jail and let that jail rot. - Doc Hudson

So that was what 15 or 16 years ago?
I don't or ever have had a mac, but that kind of logic is a little flawed

It's no more flawed than the CL logic that somebody who knows someone who once rode with someone who owned a GM vehicle that was unreliable can state all GM cars are junk.

What if you want to use something better than an iphone, say some of the stuff most of the world has been using for a while. It should be made so any phone can use it. I hate how everything is all of a sudden made just for the iphone. My current phone came out 6 months before the iphone yet has better features and all its missing out on is the multitouch. So yea this system should be able to get together with most phones. In my dream world, all phones would use a mini usb connector or some sort of standerized connector that all phones could use and then integrate that into a universal system, kind of like the mygig system or Microsoft syncs system.
I also question your suggestion that nerds love mac. Go to your local Apple store to see whose buying the products or go to sites that could be considered nerd sites and see how well they are liked there.

first off <~~Linux + Certified
Normal people can get by using linux but it's difficult. It is getting easier but you still have to do a lot from the command line to get it to function similarly to windows. That being said, if you are Linux there is a bit of geek in you. As far as Macs go, unless you are into video editing and graphic design you are paying too much for a computer when purchasing a Mac. I'm not going to get into too much detail here as this is a car forum.

Well I wasn't basing my entire post off of the stickers I see on Dubs.
I know lots of Dubbers and am one, too. Lots of Dubbers love Macs.

And the battery cables will be welded to the terminals.
Which you can't service yourself without voiding the warranty. You take your car to VW to have the battery replaced and in turn they give you somebody else's used car, but with a new battery in it.
The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.

And your warranty gets voided if you wash the car.

Oh yeah, plus the windshield will scratch up if you let anything touch it, and again, you have to buy a whole new car to get a new windshield.
But, imagine the free upgrades with contract renewal!

1.So does that mean that this preported VW is incompatible with 96% of all fuels in the world? 2. Does that mean that 96% of business won't have these a company cars? 3. Does it mean that it'll be overpriced by 500%? 4. How about for $3000 you can have and engine that runs as well as a competitors $250 engine!
No, it just means that it's terribly fragile (try dropping the new GLASS screened I-phone on something hard.) and will generate more ' I'm really desperate to sell something' because my marketshare for my core products is dropping like a rock' commercials.
The feeling of immortality extends right up to the moment of impact. Every 10% weight reduction equates to 7% fuel mileage gain. Priuses are ECONOMY cars for people who can't add.....
