If you're going to show up late to the party, you'd better at least bring something worth waiting for. A decade or so after Toyota and Honda arrived on the scene with their appealing car-based compact SUVs, Volkswagen has finally arrived with its homemade treat in hand, the 2008 Tiguan. But if you're thinking, "Yeah, the world really needs a re-bodied and lifted Golf," then guess again.
I really like this, but I wish it looked more like the concept.
Yes, it does look alot more subdued. IMO with the right pricing and engine choices, it will do very well here. I would consider a TDI Tiguan in an instant.

"What about tires?" "I'll be reusing the stock ones"
Make mine White with Teak 4motion. I'd like that new NAVI system and panoramic sunroof too. Oh, and someone get me a line on one of those high approach angle front bumpers. It'd be way better for snow drift ramming.

One of these days I'm going to break my computer screen punching you Corbic.
It's a shame that we won't be getting the offroad biased variant here. I know that not a lot of people would probably actually use it or order it, but that was really one of the things that made me excited about the Tiguan after reading about the European version of it.
I really could see this as being a great family car a few miles down the road when I have kids in the family, though, and I am REALLY glad that VW is finally in this segment.
*Edit* Kind of sucks they're not bringing the premium off-road options, even the Rav4 lets you lock the diff, and Suzuki actually has a real 4WD system in the Grand Vitara. Having off-roaded in Suzukis before, if I was being cheap in this segment I'd get the GV, and if I was buying premium I'd get the Rav4 w/ the crazy V6. VW absolutely needs to package this with a TDI or it's an also ran.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but this article did not specifically say that the U.S. will not be getting the TDI, and previous reports have stated that it will be arriving a few weeks after the initial slate of 2.0Ts.
There has still not been an official spec sheet from VW though.
I'm pretty sure we're getting the diesel, much like the Jetta Sportwagon diesel.
The article on motivemag.com did not exclude the possibility of the TDI making it over.
Hmmm...only a mention of an "autobox" but no clarification as to whether or not that really is the Tiptronic slushbox or DSG.

I'm going to swap this engine into Iceland and rescue them from their financial crisis by doing a sweet burnout on Greenland.

Xzibit could learn a thing or two from Wendelin Weideking about pimping rides - the 911 has 14 different outfits, from the naughty-schoolgirl submissive Carrera to the alcantara-clad dominatrix GT3.
It'd be nice if the screen showed text that said "LEARN HOW TO PARK" instead of these goofy assed lines. I hate that people are growing accustomed to stuff like this.

If they come out with anti-door-ding technology so people stop ****ing up my paint, i'm all for tech advancement.

Diesel is still a question mark. Because of the weight of the Tiguan, it will have to use urea injection, which adds more cost. It will ikely happen though, if not at launch.
As for trannies, yes it's an automatic (torque converter) not a DSG. It wasn't stated, but my guess is for rock crawling and other off-road driving, DSG is probably a little less ideal.
Is it going to be VW's answer to the Rav4, minus the stigma of good reliability?
If it can haul 5000lbs in NA spec, with a 4cyl gas or 4cyl diesel, it just may take away some sales from the mighty toyota. to pull 3500lbs from toyota, you have to purchase their 6cyl.
the towing aspect of the Tig is the main reason i'm interested in it.
I couldn't sit in a rav4 or a cr-v day-in day-out without wanting to slit my wrists.
I have no argument for the reliability of the 'Yotas. Great machines, but i don't want a 4Runner (for its towing capacity) - it's just too big and too thirsty.

Honestly, though, I think you're pretty alone out there on this one. I can't see towing capacity making a huge difference on these vehicles in terms of sales. The majority of these things are bought by women going to the mall, not by men or women looking to tow.
