When Ford slapped on two more doors and added some wheelbase to its quirky Bronco II and renamed it Explorer, the result was the best-selling SUV in North America. Times were good but have since changed, seeing the once-heralded Explorer name tarnishing as the oldschool body-on-frame SUV from Dearborn became less relevant.
A concept planned for this year's Detroit Auto Show aims to polish off the badge and make it more in-touch with today's market. At the heart of the design study is Ford's new EcoBoost direct injection turbocharged V6. That new bound-for-production mill is wrapped in a handsome design, dumping the body-on-frame setup for unibody no less. The concept also features a unique door configuration - sliding rear doors, combined with a pillarless opening when both front and rear open. Clearly this Explorer is far from production, though it certainly makes a compelling case for an updated take on the aging icon.
Not bad for a show vehicle, but I'll hold off judgment til i see a production prototype.

Remember kids: government subsidies are fine for 'free' markets, but government regulation is communism.

I'm waiting for a day in the future when Chrysler or Ford pulls the sheet off something at an auto show, and it's a horse. Not a Mustang, not a Pinto, it's actually a horse. They'll go so retro, it's actually a living horse.
Ford hasn’t had a nice looking concept for a wile now, however; I like this one. There isn't much styling you can do with an SUV, but compared to the current explorer and other ford SUV's, this is a nice step to take. I'm sure design/Engineering will find a way to ruin this concept when it goes to production.

Either I'm going nuts or the search wasn't working last night. I searched "explorer" and "ford" last night and didn't find any. I search "explorer" after reading this thread this morning and find not just Wimbledon's thread, but another two-pager. Yeesh.

George, is there no way to get a better search engine? This one just doesn't work all that well. Not to mention that you can't do a search on "M3". . .
Yeah, looks pretty good. Except they'll probably throw that big ugly faux chrome bar grille on it, and make the production version less smooth and sleek
