 2008 NAIAS: Audi R8 V12 TDI« »

We'll admit it; we were wrong. While sources at Audi have confirmed that there are, indeed, R8s running around with S8-sourced V10s under their rear bonnet, the car that Audi brought with it to Detroit is a V12 diesel. With 500 horsepower and 738 lb-ft of torque, the R8 TDI runs up to 62mph in only 4.2 seconds, with — this is a given for an engine with its torque peak at 1,750 rpm — strong acceleration in any gear, even the overdrive ratios of its six-speed manual.

Visually, the R8 TDI looks like the standard car from the side, and stays that way until you get to the front, where enormous air ducts have been integrated to help keep the diesel cool. The roof has been replaced with a tinted glass panel, and has an integrated ram-air intake duct that leads to carbon-fiber pipework for the twin intake tracts spanning the engine bay.

Inside, the seats are finished in custom leather with embossed "R8" logos, and the steering wheel has been fitted with a start/stop button and controller for the Drive Select system, which lets the driver choose between dynamic, sport, and race settings. The switch not only affects the magnetic ride system, but also enhances engine response for each setting.

I love the roof treatment and the front end looks pretty good. Shame that it's powered by a diesel. If only this was the RS6's V10TT instead.

Holy air intakes Batman! I'd love to see this engine in something more affordable, but something tells me that I couldn't afford anything in the Audi lineup once this is inside.

Wow.

holy ****. that thing looks... INSANE. I didn't think they could make the regular R8 look even more crazier, all i can say is wow. And to those with the negative diesel comments, why even post if you obviously have no idea what your talking about?

'Cause most of them are. The exterior pictures, like those of the GTI W12-650, are high-quality renders. But rest assured, the car is very real. It more than likely wasn't ready in time for a photography session.

Funny how they deleted the rear view mirror... seeing as how there is no point for it anyways. As cool as that intake is, I wonder why they didn't just take it from the existing or behind the door windows.

Man, it sucks to not be rich.

Forgive me for using a LoLcat or rather a LoLsquirrel) image, but this one absolutely reflects my feelings!

The roof scoop and the instruments are so badass; did not think they could evolve the car design without overdoing it?

BTW: Is the roof scoop a tie to the AVUS quattro?

It's not sports cars that compete and win LeMans and other GT racing events. But your opinion is your opinion, you're entitled to it
As for the R8 TDI, all I can say is WAWAWEWA

Not fond of any leather surface which repeat the brand over and over again.

But this is cool. There may or may not be a market for this (well..at least to the extent of the normal r8), but Audi will gain ever more respect from me for proving it can be done.

Love how they put effort into differentiating the design of the diesel R8. I especially love the canopy. Stunning stuff.
