When we laid out what was coming to Detroit this year in our NAIAS preview, we could have never guessed we'd have gotten so much right. By dint of two boards — Ouija and dart — we achieved roughly 90-percent accuracy. Some might attribute this prescience instead to all the pre-packaged pre-show information we got ahead of time. But that's missing the point. We're not quite sure what the point is, but that's definitely a few meters wide of it.
So, with our awesomeness secured, it's time to pronounce. What did we like? What didn't we like? What induced fits of laughter, nausea, and explosive diarrhea? Here is where we net out.
Damn, is this thing is a production car?!? I can't believe the rise on the hood, and the aggressive of....everything. And what's this? Thigh bolsters on an American car?
IS IT?!?! WOW, awesome
"Look at me i have a pink Miata!" - Homer Simpson acting queer.
I wish the CTS-V looked as good as that car. A nearly perfect interior coupled with that aggressive, ultra-modern exterior would be a clear winner if it comes to production largely unmolested. Definitely my favorite car of NAIAS 2008.

+1... The V mesh grille just doesnt suit the new CTS... or at least, in they way they applied it. The standard CTS, and The coupe look far more agressive / cooler than the V.
"One of God's own prototypes. Some kind of high powered mutant never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die."

WTF is Cadillac doing? It's like they're making all the freaking right moves man. That coupe is gorgeous, far more attractive than the g35c, that's for sure.

Listen up, buddy, I've had both - I eat plain bagels with cream cheese all the time, and I know people who've brought me onion bagels to try. I've toasted them both. I've even had poppy seed bagels and bagels and lox with capers. I'll pit your onion bagel against my plain bagel with cream cheese any time anywhere, just meet me halfway.
The CTS coupe is not quite a production car, but it's far from a pie-in-the-sky concept. There are a few detail changes for the real version, such as the rear exhaust treatment. That's the final body envelope, though.
I know it will probably not sell very well, as I'm not sure what the heck segment it is supposed to compete against, but I really like the side profile shot of that X6.
Also, really digging that CTS coupe and the Ford Verve (although curious what changes would need to be made to get the Verve into production. Very interesting interior and exterior on that car.
Most Quizzical: BMW X6 Okay, so you want to create a coupe. First thing you do? Add two rear doors. Then, jack it up to raise its center of gravity. Finally, add lots and lots of mass. A fine recipe for sports-car handling, no? Are we Americans so obsessed with the idea of the crossover that we want something like this, or does BMW just think we are? As one prominent pundit told us, "The X6 is merely horrible. But the next wave of BMWs is truly terrible."
What is that quote referring to? Is BMW about to take a swan dive like Mercedes did in the mid 90s? As much as I don't like the styling on most current BMWs, I'd still have to say they are pretty impressive cars, and it seems hard to believe that they are working on a new wave of terrible cars.
I kept hearing how "sexy" this thing looks by reading some of the reviews.
But while I don't think it is ugly necessarily, I also don't think it is anything resembling sexy or good looking. It's, well, different. But that's about it.
BMW will still probably sell everyone they will make though.

I'm actually starting to really like the X6. That shade of red really works well. The side profile is quite sexy and I have to wonder what it would look like if it were more like a 5-series hatch rather than an X5 hatch.
Good read, interesting perspective. Question though, why would a CTS wagon going to be a surprise? Isn't the current SRX built on the previous gen CTS chassis?

Thanks. It's the model mix that's surprising to us; not the fact that the component-set-previously-known-as-Sigma can do wagon/crossover duty. That was established, as you note, with the SRX. From what we've heard, the CTW (?) is going to be a real station wagon, and will compete with the 3-/5-series tourings and C-/E-class wagons.

The advantage to buying a higher-mileage model is that you can buy the car in two payments -- the first is for the initial purchase and the second is for your mechanic's retirement fund. -PassSedanGLX
I'm out of the loop--what the hell's a GILF? There's so many possibilities.
Sorry somebody had to do it...

If the build that with a 6 Speed manual and a Turbo V6, IT will be my next car!
There was a lot to like about the coverage of the Detroit show. Green has been the thing here in America, so that wasn't a surprise. Mazda's present concept direction has produced genuine works of art. They are impractical designs, but they are fluidly beautiful in shape. It is nice to see Mazda find a niche for itself.
Now, how about a Mazda3 three-door hatch to help compensate for us not having the Euro Focus?
