 Motive First Drive: 2009 BMW 1-series Convertible« »

Go ahead. Take one look at it and jump to the usual conclusion. Yeah, sure, it's a four-seat drop-top with the coveted blue-and-white roundels at each end, but don't assume it's only good for running between cheerleading practice and the mall. BMW's new 1-series convertible is a seriously good driver's car that looks even better in the metal than the coupe on which it's based. And Godammit, it's not a chick car!

If BMW's newest convertible were merely a boulevard-cruising frontin' machine, surely it's PR team would have flown the first pack of international journalists to the south of France to frolic on the beaches of Nice and simply take in the beauty of its latest sunchaser. Instead, BMW let us have a go on the challenging mountain roads-cum-sheep paths outside of Valencia, Spain. The weather was warm enough to enjoy top-down motoring, cool enough to feel justified in driving with the top up, and the scenery amply majestic for beauty shots. But the roads — oh, sweet Lord — the roads were made for driving. And rather than being handed a set of instructions for a prescribed route, we were given a virtual catalog of available driving roads on which to get lost for the day.

Good read. Looks slightly more aggressive than its larger sibling.

But having Paris Hilton drive it isn't going to help undo the "chick car" image

That's not Paris Hilton, but that's not the first time Bryan's heard that.

That's one attractive little car.

If convertibles were my cup of tea, I would definitely consider one.

The 1 sounds like a great car. The early test runs I read in US magazines have praised the 135i (coupe's) speed and handling. Even if the 1 does not weight much less than its bigger brother, it does still weigh less. Bryan does have a point: this car, with its small size and low price, could be marked as a chick's car. The 3 kinda suffers from that anyway. The only issue I see with the 1 ragtop is that it will tread into Z4 price territory.

I'm eagerly waiting for the next John Cooper Works Mini ragtop. But I think I found the next step up from that exciting car. Anything that moves us to something smaller and cheaper is progress in my book.

She might look like Paris Hilton, but this girl can actually drive. She is one of BMW's regular event staffers, she's from Munich, and can probably out-drive half the Car Lounge.

In all sincerity, it really is unfortunate for the point of this article that they used a "chick" driver for photography. Or maybe it's just ironic.

Chick Car. You must want to buy one, Bryan, because regardless of how it drives, that is the chick-cariest car I've seen since the Mini Convertible.

I have to say it again... pretty much every write-up that you guys do has a pretty glaring and lazy photoshop-related error. This time it's the animation... it just looks bad and makes it all look very unprofessional.
Fix the levels and level out the car and you're golden.

Trust me, I'm not living under the illusion that the 1 Series convertible won't end up being pegged as a girlie car. The mere fact that it's a BMW convertible almost guarantees that. I'm just saying it's too bad, because this car feels as capable as many so-called "sport coupes."
