There's no better way to judge a premium automaker than by its big gran turismo coupes. They fully embody the hopes and dreams of their creators, as well as the romance and athleticism that keep us, the addicted, drooling. This, despite the painful truth that paying more for less car isn't exactly sensible. Even though the smaller 3-series has made the premium sports coupe market its, um, lady, the 6-series is the BMW that most evokes high-class, high-speed European motoring. We've brought together a pair of 6-series cars — a 2008 650i and a 1987 L6 — to better understand how far the 6-series has come, and how far it's gone. In each generation, minor facelifts and power bumps have kept the cars current — we've made sure that the cars we've gathered here represent the most recent and the most powerful iterations of their chassis codes, M cars excepted...
That's a really nice write-up. I have to say, the six series, old or new, has never appealed to me. But maybe because it is exactly as you described...a big touring car priced for rich cars who want to make a statement. And good point about Hoodvoynk, too. Too many people are quick to bash Bangle for some of the less liked BMW designs, forgetting that others are involved. However, Hoodvoynk is the one behind the Concept CS, which everyone seems to like.
Anyway, the E24 will always live on in my mind as Mr. Igoe's car from Innerspace.
Forgot to add this to the bottom of the article and I will now, but a special thanks to Adam Franzen of Palatine, IL for the use of his lovely black '87 L6. It was a rare car then, it is even rarer now, and it is one of few that has a crack-free leather dash. He braved the Chicago in January elements and spent hours detailing the car to help us out.
The above is an excerpt from the best selling book Band of Boozers, a heroic tale of ordinary alcoholics thrown together in an extraordinary time. Experience this harrowing Wino War II tale as only those that drank it can slurr.
Never been a Bimmer fan, but I always liked the Six. As a kid, BMWs had always looked like boxes on wheels, closely resembling the VWs lying all over the place. In the present, Bimmers seem so lifeless, though I prefer the streamlined shapes of today to the chubby ones of the 1990s and the squared ones of the '80s.
The Six's angular front-end, muscular lines, and lengthy shape allow the details to stand out better than the tiny Threes of the era. Stu hit the mark: the Six today still stands apart from the rest of the BMW lineup; but it's lost the character it had with the influx of digital components and weight in the name of "progress." All of this SMG and iDrive crap is just further diluting the roadgoing experience. The E63 instrument panel is much cleaner, and the exterior looks more sophisticated.
The Six, along with the M1 and the Eight, remains one of my favorite German coupes of the 1970s and '80s. It looks nicer than the Mercedes SL-Class or the Jaguar XJ-S. BMW definitely scored a point here.
I despise almost everything about the new one, it just offends every sense. The E24, though, .

His car is absolutely immaculate, probably the nicest E24 I've seen so far

i'm not a bmw guy, but the e24 is in my top 10 list of favorite non-new cars. i think it's prob one of the most beautiful designs of the 70-80s. every time i see one, i just wanna go up and make love to it.... ok, maybe not make love, but you know what i mean. I would prob look for a grey-market M6 or import one if i was in the market. if i couldn't find one, i'd be happy with the 635CSi though. the owner is a lucky guy!
I forgot to mention.. while the new 6 is nice looking for the most part, it's not nearly as beautiful as the e24 and never will be. It's very low on my desirability scale.
