We've reported in the past that the Ford Fiesta was coming in 2009 to kick off FoMoCo's small-product renaissance, and the automaker has confirmed those rumors with the press release accompanying its new Fiesta. The Fiesta, which will be introduced at Geneva, is destined for global manufacture and sale, including "the Americas," and it will share the name Fiesta in every market that sells it.
Unlike many of its competitors in the small-car segment which have grown in size and weight, the new Fiesta, which is based on the same Mazda-developed B2E platform that underpins the new Mazda2, stands on virtually the same footprint as its predecessor. It's also the second car to show off Ford's "kinetic" design language that debuted with the new Mondeo last year.
There's no word on which engine will be in the US-spec Fiesta, but chances are it'll be the 115-horsepower 1.6-liter Duratec that's the top-line gas engine in the Euro model.
Full technical details of the new Fiesta range will be released closer to the launch of the production model in autumn 2008, and pictures of the five-door will be released at the Geneva show.

ha ha somebody said that u guys dont need to prove to the rice community how fast ur cars are. Thats ok ive acquired 2 honda civics and a bmw 325 from street racing for pinks and its put another 46,000 in my pocket so i dont care what u guys say.
I'll say it again: I will trade my Civic in tomorrow on the first little diesel hatch that's offered here. The 1.6 diesel in the current Fiesta would be a perfect: 90 horsepower, 0-60 in 11.2 seconds, and 45 city/60 hwy US MPG.

Why do they think we don't want this?
because of the part in bold.

All fellow members of the Roman senate hear me. Shall we continue to build palace after palace for the rich? Or shall we aspire to a more noble purpose and build decent housing for the poor? How does the senate vote?
Psh. An automatic Honda Fit is just as "slow" and Honda isn't having any trouble moving them off the lots. The people worried about performance can just get the gasser.
Nice car...good looking car...good design lineage to the prior Focus.
Will absolutely kill the new, ugly, girly, Focus....will absolutely canibalize it.
Different segment...not enough spread.
The feeling of immortality extends right up to the moment of impact. Every 10% weight reduction equates to 7% fuel mileage gain. Priuses are ECONOMY cars for people who can't add.....
I hope the motor is just as well made as the exterior of the car. But seeing how its such a small motor i don't see why it would be a problem to work with. And yea i do like the Euro look, nice job.
No,I'm breathless and flabbergasted that Ford could actually produce something decent!
Additionally, the interior doesn't even look like it was sub-contracted to Rubbermaid...like the Mustang.
I too think a Diesel is a good idea.

oh, and for those wondering what GMs response will be... the next gen Corsa will be built in the US for global market. including US (though i think the fiesta is Astra sized?)

I just wish Ford would give us the heated windscreens like they do in Europe. I understand how the InstaClear windshields could have been considered a "fail", but we've moved past that -- every Land Rover model has one...why not the rest?
That thing will be an EPIC failure, read my words.
Way, WAY too expensive for the American market. Yes, Americans CAN pay for it, but they WON'T pay for it. It's way too small for it's price, and it hasn't got a pedigree (BADGE) to compensate.
FoMoCo's current team has to be the dumbest team since the ones that were responsible for the Mistake and the Detour. Europeans are willing to sacrifice size for fuel efficiency and the high costs and inconveniences that come with larger cars, so they want their cars loaded, Americans don't have those concerns. If an American can't afford the fuel for a Civic, Mazda 3, Rabbit, Jetta or whatever, they won't be able to afford a 16,000 USD mini hatch...
Either way, the CL is having a collective orgasm. We'll talk next year.
2008 Chevrolet Chevy C2 - 1.6 liters of pure fire breathing dyno-juice burning fury! 1998 Kawasaki ER-5 - Oldie but goodie! 2005 Yamaha XT660R - The beast, and Euro-3 at that!
That is just MINDBLOWING!! (by my Ford expectations)
Whatacar! Not only does it look great outside, but that interior is better than anything in any Ford you can buy in America today...including some Lincolns!
My only worry is price. That is a premium subcompact car so I don't know if people would be accepting of something like that in the US where most folks equate car price with size.
But otherwise, just a superb car. And that Mondeo interior is just awesome. Look at the overall design and all the details. The Ford badge looks exactly the same like it does in American Fords but it doesn't give off "cheap" like it does in American Fords.
(although that panel fit near the gearbox seems a little off. Same deal in the Fiesta)
