NEW YORK - The 2010 Pontiac G8 sport truck blurs the line between cars and trucks and is creating an all-new segment in the North American car market. This dramatically different vehicle blends the sporty handling of a performance coupe with the cargo capabilities of a light truck.
Based on the all-new Pontiac G8 performance sedan, the newest member of the G8 family has a longer wheelbase and a cargo bed suitable for either work or recreation. The G8 sport truck significantly stretches Pontiac's commitment to style and performance and is expected to arrive in dealers' showrooms in late 2009.
That looks much better than the Ute with just those subtle changes!!! I wonder if this will be available with the V8 and a manual??? Then again...the 6 speed auto is supposed to be pretty nice...so...... Hello next car!

My dreams of a gas-swilling RWD manual transmission American wagon with room for a Golden Retarded and a Saturday's worth of Home Depot purchases be dashed.

The gas crisis of the 70's brought on the same kinds of cars as consumers shifted to more efficient vehicles. The more things change, the more they stay the same.
The SSR was a showpiece cruiser. It had a carpeted bed with a hard tonneau cover which could not be removed, making it entirely useless for actual hauling or truck duty. It also had tiny cargo capacity and minimal towing capability, and was too expensive/rare for most owners to treat it as a truck.
The G8 Ute has a decently-sized, usefully-laid-out bed that most owners won't feel bad filling up with dirt/plywood/ATVs, and it'll likely be priced comparably with other V8 pickups while offering a lot more performance and day-to-day usability.
Why? I'd rather have people driving around in this, than buying a full size truck, and hardly using it at all. If the gas mileage is the same as the sedan, it will get better gas mileage than the most fullsize trucks ever will.

Further, if I'm going to get in a collision with a V8 pickup, Id' MUCH rather it be sitting at a G8's ride height rather than that of a fullsize F150 or Silverado. Lower center of gravity and sedan-height bumpers = me not getting a bowtie or blue oval in the temple.

Exactly... This truck can carry 4x8 sheets flat, and will hold around 27 sheets of 1/2" sheetrock within capacity.... 1,700 pounds in AU form. It's got a decent tow rating too.
This is a truly capable truck out there, useful for what 80% of buyers use their light trucks for (including myself). I'm very interested to see if this thing catches on, and hopefully if they price it right I'll do my part.

"No, honey, you don't look retarded at all! I'm soo happy you cut your hair like I told you to [the girls will love this one. For my next trick I'll have him jump off the Brooklyn Bridge]"
Way cool...plus hopefully there will be a V6 decontented model for fleet sales. Now that would be an awesome plan for the people that need the utility but not the ride height of a pickup.

Like me. Give me a V6 and I will be a happy man. It would be great to transport the bike around.
I showed this to my roommate who knows only verrrrry little about cars and his response? "What the f***? No, no! It's an El Camino, but it's...a Pontiac?"

Always remember to close all parentheses. We're not paying to air condition the entire paragraph.
Agreed. Although there is no way to know for sure, I think this will fare even worse than if they brought the wagon over. No vehicle of this sort have fared well within the last 2 decades (Brat, Baja, SSR). The market for a two-door "car" with a truck bed is VERY limited. It's just not appealing to most people.

The correlation between current/former Volkswagen ownership and being an impolite douche-canoe is in the mild-positive range.
