It's morning at a retired airport ground that adjoins the Sebring International Raceway. I'm in town for the American Le Mans Series' 12 Hours of Sebring race, and word from Audi was that we might take a quick spin in their diesel-powered, mid-engined R8 supercar shown just last week in Geneva and planned for display here at the race tomorrow.
The crimson R8 V12 TDI "Le Mans" sits before me on the tarmac, awaiting some quick frottage just enough to see the potential, though not enough to jeopardize Audi's one-off prototype. The car is still a concept, which means two things: First, it's hasn't undergone the battery of tests that production cars do and, second, its build cost was more than the $1.2 million my insurance company says my life is worth. "Nothing over 50," say the Audi's handlers. Good idea...
But that would only happen in my magical dreamworld, where VW dealers were a Charlie and the Chocolate Factory-like experience, everything had 4Motion and only cost $12K, and the ORLY owls were my co-pilots.
Unfortunately, hackin' it is a way of life in auto journalism. Hemingway was able to drive an ambulance and write a book; most of these guys couldn't do either.
Grrrrrreat. Another answer to a question that nobody asked. Ridiculous.
The S4 new V6 bi-turbo would make more sense....
Same thing for Toyota making Lexus LS600h. These cars are more like Halo car or tech showcase. Toyota take pride for their Hybrid Synergy and Audi for their TDI.
There is nothing to get, except a pointless showcase that VW/Audi fanboys will 'want' ... for no reason, just for the 'cool' factor.
It's nothing to do with fanbois either. It's a showcase of diesel technology, nothing more. It's to show the vast majority of people who feel diesel is loud, rough, and suited only for tractors that the technology exists to make smooth, quiet, clean, and even sporty diesel powerplants.
Considering diesel cars make up roughly half of Audi's sales, there are a whole lot of people who would disagree with your "pointless" claim.
It's a design study. It's not meant to sell in high numbers, if at all. It's not meant to beat cars like the GTR, Z06, or 911. It's meant to prove a point.
In 200 years when crude oil has all dried up someone will be able to pull that R8 out of a museum fill it up with bio-diesel and go for a spirited drive. Not so sure they'll be able to do that in the GTR

Is there any point to either your E46 or E90 having any more horsepower than is necessary to keep up with the traffic and maintain speed on the highway? Is there any point to all of the electronic gadgets both cars contain? Is there any point to driving anything other than a base model Kia?

WHAT point exactly. That it takes +4 cyl. to a diesel to match a gas V8?.
you really are stupid arent you?
name 1 other diesel sports car/super car that isnt the R10.

If you don't have anything else than childish personal attack, SHUT YOUR MOUTH UP, imbecile.
well, when you cant grasp the idea that this car has no real point except to demonstrate the diesel technology audi can place into what some consider a "supercar", i think the childish personal attacks have merit.

You continue to show your imbecility. Not good.
Don't let kids play with formulas: TORQUE answers the question "Will it be able to do it?" POWER answers the question "How fast will it do it?

If 5 year old Audis are horribly unreliable, I could only imagine the global effort it would take to get and keep a 200 year old Audi running.
For the most part. If memory serves, it's also the cucumber capital of Japan. Hence the home-market ads for the FT-86 featuring Takeichi-kun, the cartoon cucumber whose meteoric rise through the underground drift world has shamed him in the eyes of his school-master.
Except you still have yet to substantiate your claim or respond in a reasonable, respectable manner to his point.
I suppose you probably don't like that it would be faster than your BMWs. Also, your signature contradicts your claim.
It's sort of supposed to be a production interpretation of the R10. It could also theoretically be employed in a GT1 or GT2 application. What do you think the M1 was for BMW?

True, it could be employed as a GT1, though.
