New York 2008: Ford Transit Connect Taxi concept« »

Did we call it, or did we call it? When the Transit Connect was introduced at the Detroit show this year, the words on our lips ran something along the lines of "Crown Victoria replacement." Now, Ford is bringing a Transit Connect taxi concept to the yellow-box capital of the world, New York City.

Built on a dedicated truck platform, the Transit Connect has been the mainstay of European plumbers and hotel shuttle operators for years, so its adaptation to commercial duty in the U.S. was a natural. And as a taxi, the Transit Connect not only offers more people room, but also more cargo room than the Crown Victoria that's de rigueur for hired cars. "When cities ran out of horizontal space at the turn of the 20th century, architects started to build upward," said Peter Horbury, executive director of Design. "The Transit Connect Taxi concept brings that same idea to the streets, changing the shape of the space, making it taller with a smaller and narrow footprint."

It's not just nicer for passengers - the driver's area includes in-dash navigation with real-time traffic and weather information, and an extreme-duty version of Ford's Work Solutions system to alert drivers to when maintenance needs to be done to their cab.

I'll be curious to see what engine options are available for it... if they could get a viable hybrid option that would be fantastic.

What's the holey foosball-looking thing in the divider for? Is it just a really fancy way of making a hole for the passenger and driver to talk thru?

x2 on the hybrid option.

Well, the Transit (whose platform the Connect is based on) does compete with the Sprinter over there.

Agreed...some confusion here.

Transit (been around 35 years, millions of variants...this is the smallest one)

Transit Connect (Replacement for the Escort Van. Car based and shares the Fiestas chassis, not the Transits. Its just trading on the Transits name. )

For reference, the Escort Van

And in passing, a few of the van based Taxis kicking around the UK:

Fiat Doblo Taxi

Renault Traffic / Vauxhall Vivaro

Merc V Class

They feel a bit van like inside but they do the job. I do like the concept above

I could get used to this. It has a good purpose-built taxi look. I don't think I could ever get used to seeing a fleet of Highlander Hybrid NYC taxis, or whatever.

I think that Bloomberg's plan is to remake NYC in the model of a European city, which I find slightly saddening but perhaps inevitable. So if they're going to do it, they might as well go all the way and use genuine Euro taxis.
