Introducing the SRT model of the Challenger first was unprecedented in Chrysler history - the hi-po versions have always come later in production, after the initial buzz has died down. But now that we've seen the ultimate Challenger, Dodge is fleshing out the rest of its lineup with the new Challenger R/T and SE. Equipped with a 5.7-liter V8 and a 3.5-liter V6, respectively, the new Challengers are available with the same range of equipment that the SRT offers, including Chrysler's MyGIG™ in-dash hard drive for music and navigation.
The big news accompanying the announcement of those two models applies only to V8 Challengers, and it's the availability of a six-speed manual transmission for 2009. Sourced from Tremec, the TR-6060 transmission marks the first time that a new Hemi powered car has been offered with a stick shift.
But that would only happen in my magical dreamworld, where VW dealers were a Charlie and the Chocolate Factory-like experience, everything had 4Motion and only cost $12K, and the ORLY owls were my co-pilots.
I'm happy a manual is available but doesn't this look like it's going to have a massive throw?
It's probably just canted forwards to move it closer to the steering wheel. I wish it was like that in my car. With my fixed race bucket and harness, I can barely get it into second gear.

Radar Operator: Colonel, you better have a look at this radar. Colonel: What is it, son? Radar Operator: I don't know, sir, but it looks like a giant... Jet Pilot: Dick. Dick, take a look out of starboard. Co-Pilot: Oh my God, it looks like a huge... Bird-Watching Woman: Pecker. Bird-Watching Man: [raising binoculars] Ooh, Where? Bird-Watching Woman: Over there. What sort of bird is that? Wait, it's not a woodpecker, it looks like someone's... Army Sergeant: Privates. We have reports of an unidentified flying object. It has a long, smooth shaft, complete with... Baseball Umpire: Two balls. [looking up from game] Baseball Umpire: What is that. It looks just like an enormous... Chinese Teacher: Wang. pay attention. Wang: I was distracted by that giant flying... Musician: Willie. Willie: Yeah? Musician: What's that? Willie: [squints] Well, that looks like a huge... Colonel: Johnson.

any pics of a de-contented lowly SE? I would really like to see how this car would look in base form....
Now, I don't want to make any assumptions (because god only knows where the Car Lounge would be without those) but the tires in this shot look narrow enough to be a lower end configuration. And I think it looks pretty damned good in this pic.

It looks like a R/T badge on the spoiler there. Hopefully these come in at a good price, as much as I would want SRT, my budget would likely say R/T.

Who else saw this picture and immediately thought "VANISHING POINT!"?
And does anybody know if the 6-speed manual they're throwing in the Challenger will be available aftermarket? If so, I think we have all the makings for a 6-speed Charger/300/SRT Grand Cherokee!

Even with the certainly lower prices of these models, I still just don't think the styling makes up for its objective shortcomings compared to the Mustang, Camaro, or even the Genesis Coupe.

Is the six speed available with both V-8s (the 5.7 and 6.1) or just the 5.7L. Also did they add a limited slip as an option on the R/T and SRT?
Cheers Chris
Yes, the six-speed is available on both the 5.7 and the 6.1, but not the V6 models. The LSD should be available starting in 2009, so I don't know why Chrysler didn't announce it yet.

If you look at some of the pictures in the gallery, you can clearly see the SRT (orange) spinning one rear in the earlier photos but in some of the new ones (presumably added today) you can see the white car spinning both.
I was originally on the fence about this car but as of late I'm really beginning to like it. Sure it's retro but if you were going to redo a car this one was one of the lookers to choose. Interestingly, my opinion of the new Camaro has been going the other way. I swore some years ago that I would never own another Mopar (Omni fall out) but this car may be something I can live with. The black on black with gray/black hood decal photos from the show have really impressed me.
Sooooo how long before ole Mopar install the 6 speed stick in the Charger to do battle with G8

x2 I totally respect the people who love this car. For me, the interior is miserable and in no way unique. Exterior is unique, however, it is a Chrysler and these cars are a dying breed.
