Coinciding with the launch of its new SMS Limited brand, sports car manufacturer Saleen has unveiled a new supercar concept at today’s New York Auto Show that boasts a 650hp V8 engine running on ethanol. Already being touted as the successor to the current S7 flagship, the new car is still in the design phase and will only go into production if it receives enough interest from show goers.
The concept carries the name S5S Raptor and it features a mid-mounted supercharged 5.0L V8 engine that can burn either petrol or 85% ethanol blended fuels. Other features include a lightweight aluminum chassis and composite body and a six-speed manual transmission sending drive to the rear wheels. The sprint to 60mph should take a little over three seconds and top speed is an estimated 200mph.
As this image reveals, the new concept is just as aggressive as the current mid-engined S7 supercar but it will be priced much lower than the $600,000 flagship if it were to enter production. If given the green light, Saleen claims the car could be in showrooms within two years with a price tag of $185,000.
I'm disappointed they're promoting ethanol as if it's the cure for high gas prices and dependency on foreign oil.
Why? It solves all the problems you stated, but doesn't solve the pollution problem.

America is NOT the terrible place that a generation of schoolteachers, professors, and other mind-shapers have convinced a generation of young people that it is. We are in a mess right now. But it is NOT because America, or its people are somehow deserving of troubles.

how is a limited production supercar that certainly won't be daily driven in the vast majority of cases running on ethanol considered to be promoting a 'cure' for high gas prices and dependency on foreign oil
It says "It will go into production if it recieves enough interest from showgoers". I know manufacterers alwaays do tthis, but how? Do they have some sort of undercover scout amoung the crowd listening to their reactions, or is there someone that showgoers can actually go up to and talk about their opinion on car?
And btw, although the car seems fairly unoriginal with its obvious Lamborghini character, it looks amazing and I hope to see it in production. If the price stayed at a true $185,000, this car would be an incredible bargain. Of course, the same was said for the Ford GT until dealer markup. *sigh*
I agree, unfortunately I don't think it will pass DOT. Something about the third brake light having to be completely separate from the rest of the tail lights. The NSX was supposed to make a loop like this but ran afoul of this stupid regulation.

You know, since you always seem to see ridiculous likenesses in every new vehicle, it makes me wonder how you've made it through life thus far without mistaking a jug of bleach for your latte.
Its there, just look a bit closer. You can see the line faintly for the door.
Good to know they have finally moved on past the S7 because this thing is hot.
Lets hope the rest of the fit and finish is as good as that door gap!
This thing looks great to me. The S7 was a beast, but it was WAY too raw for mass consumption (even by supercar standards). This looks damn good to me.
I'd love to see some great American exotics that can compete on more than just raw performance numbers. I hope they tastefully wrap the inside of this thing with the best dead cow ass money can buy, and put in some nicely finished controls and switchgear that aren't sourced from a low end Ford.
Those pics make it look like a much more "mature" car then the S7. The S7 was good for a first attempt at building a world class supercar, but it seems they came much closer to the target this time around.
