 Motive First Drive: 2009 BMW X6« »

Don't worry if you don't "get" BMW's new X6 at first; you're definitely not alone. After all, BMW claims it has created an entirely new class of vehicle — the Sport Activity Coupe, or SAC (that's right, now stop snickering). Is it a car or a truck? Is it a coupe or a sedan? More importantly, is it a real a BMW, or just a shrewd twist on the current four-door-coupe fad? We were skeptical, too: BMW earned its greatness on cars that were both light and agile, and the formula for a spry-handling vehicle rarely involves a high center of gravity and extraneous mass. But after spending a day with a pair of X6s, we have a better understanding of this unconventional beast, and we're convinced the combination of excellent powertrains and light-feeling chassis may yet result in a genuine BMW, even if buyers see it for nothing more than a prestigious novelty...

Worst nomenclature ever. And it needs a rear view camera and a manual option so that it can compete with the Cayenne GTS.

I think that a manual transmission would be a great option. Overall, I think its an appealing car/suv crossover.

You can get a rearview camera for $400 or as part of the $2000 technology package.

I've seen them in person, and I'm enjoying their temporary absence from the road.

Photos don't convey how large and ungainly it really is. Pictures make it look closer in size to the 3-series than the X5. Inside the sloping roof and black headliner conspire to make rear seating positions feel claustrophobic.

The X6 makes my brain hurt. All the size and heft of the X5 (or many other SUVs), but with greatly impaired utility.

Rather than merely preventing wheel slip, as a conventional limited-slip diff would do, DPC is actually capable of accelerating the outer rear wheel to enhance turn-in and reduce understeering tendencies in demanding situations.

I'd like to hear more about this. I can't figure out how the driveline could deliver "extra" power to only one wheel, unless it's really just the other 3 wheels braking.

Also, X6's without the rear-view camera option sound like an accident waiting to happen.

Much like the Acura SH-AWD system, rather than sending "extra" power to one wheel, the system proportions more of the power coming to the rear to the outside tire, in effect overdriving it compared to the inside rear tire.

Sounds like the Torsen differentials that people put into VWs. They actively transfer power to the wheel with the most grip.

I've seen a few at different car shows and crawled around one for a while at the NY auto show. I think it looks fantastic. Very aggressive from the head-on perspective.

I'd love the xDrive and four doors, yet don't want a big box SUV. I think this car would suit me quite nicely.

I love it too...as a long time BMW owner and fan, and an X5 owner, I just love the X6. It is definitely a "lifestyle" vehicle more than it is practical. This is going to appeal to the same folks that bought X5 4.6is/4.8is'. If you poke around x5world.com, these are treated more as giant sports cars than fast SUVs. BMW marketing may have gotten i wrong, whose to say...they probably won't sell a ton for sure. However weird BMWs have always had an appeal to me, which may be plain looking at what I own. The current X5 is too big.

Maybe in 3 years, it will be a good used buy, depending on what gas prices do. New, its' a bit too expensive, I did the online configuration yesterday and even with the smaller motor it came to $66K.

I don't buy a car based on how it looks on paper. I need to have an emotional response as well. I love wagons, but none of those do it for me the way the X6 did when I spent some time with it.
