First Details of Audi's Supercharged 3.0T Surface at Auto Motor und Sport« »

Auto Motor und Sport has published the first report to surface out of that engine symposium in Vienna this morning where Volkswagen AG powertrain czar Wolfgang Hatz presented on the new 3.0T FSI engine planned for the next-generation S4, A6 and likely Q5 and Q7 as well. Thanks Mike again for the tip. The AMundS link is below at the bottom, but here's a quick translation of their German text.

Quote »
As expected at the Vienna Motor Symposium, Audi announced plans to introduce a new supercharged V6 engine. It is intended first for the refreshed A6 and also for the next-generation S4.

The previous S4 made us of a powerful 344-hp normally aspirated 4.2 V8. This new engine will be used in Europe and North America and will be good for 350 hp in the S4.

Despite similar levels of power to the old V8, the new V6 consumes significantly less fuel. It will be combined with a sports differential from Magna, which will also later be used in Q5 and S5 models.

The new Audi S4 is expected shortly after the A6 this autumn. For the A6, the new supercharged V6 engine will be implemented at the same time as a new facelift and will produce 290 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque in the A6 application.

We're monitoring all sources from Audi to try to get more information about today's presentation, but this information from Auto Motor und Sport is most interesting. 350hp is more than expected by about 20hp.

Unless it's twin charged like the Golf GT. In any event, this news should lead to at least 20 threads within about an hour comparing the virtues of this new Audi motor that we really don't know much about to the BMW I6t motor.

I look forward to hearing more about what Audi has in store for the B8 S4. Sounds like it will be a pretty quick car.

i335 For the A4. In fact, I think a 290 hp version would get power levels similar to the BMW unit.

Modding will be easier again. We'll see commonly S4 with 400 hp.

The only thing im curious, how much power could that motor get with chip tuning.

Expect 1,000,000,000 threads discussing which motor is more tunable, the BMW or the Audi

3.0T FSI will be the badge, but it's supercharged. Audi wants to keep the moniker for all forced induction is what I'm told.

You don't get large gains from "Chip tuning" a Supercharged engine. In order to increase the boost like a turbocharged chip would, you have to replace it with a smaller pulley.

I bet Audi's warranty department lobbied hard for that one.

This setup will likely be tuned for torque as it's intended for the heavier A6, Q5 and eventually base engine for Q7.

Yeah, that will be a bit of a problem when it comes to maximum power, but if it's a screw type blower, then it should have excellent low end tq values which should be very similar, if not a bit better than the already low-end tq of the BMW turbo motor. I do wonder what sorts of gears are turning in the heads of tuners? Do they start to think about aftermarket blowers like they have done in the Ford camp or go the route of many G60 owners and think about developing an aftermarket turbo kit that replaces the blower completely?

In any event, I would think the fellas at VF engineering would be very interested in this new S4, even though the car won't likely use a centrifugal blower.

Gotta say... sounds cool. 350hp is nothing to scoff at, definitely. Throw in the much better balance of the B8 platform, and this could be quite the driver's car.

My preferences for engines tend to go like this:

Naturally aspirated > Turbocharged > Supercharged

But, things change. And, yes... this won't be the last we hear of this engine.

135i + GTR + War of the ~300-350hp forced induction 6 cylinder engines = Apocalypse? Mass banning? Dozens of demotivational posters?

That doesn't quite make sense. "T" for supercharged?

Either way, should make for a more reliable engine than the 2.7T.

We're monitoring all sources from Audi to try to get more information about today's presentation, but this information from Auto Motor und Sport is most interesting. 350hp is more than expected by about 20hp.

Is it likely that the same supercharger could be (factory) tuned with 60 more hp? (..I'm comparing the 290 A6 tune with the 350 S4).
-Are we talking about Audi having sourced 2 different superchargers, for the 2 applications?
-Has there been any factory tuned blower adding ~100hp on only 3 liters of displacement?

I'll mock the words from C&D: That bump in output is currently a mystery (*cough* TSI S4 *cough*)

Nice one

That being said, I don't see what the big deal is. It makes roughly the same power as the outgoing V8 and consumes far less fuel. Sounds like a win-win to me.
