I posted in the audi forum, but there isnt as much traffic on that forums so I needed to put it in here.
Its a 1995 Audi 90 V6 Auto. Has been amazing! I Was driving yesterday all around town with no signs of anything going wrong. Got home and parked it, later that night when I went to go out again I started it right up and tried to shift out of park and into reverse and it would move over to the right but then it wouldn't move down into reverse or anything. Remember this is with an Automatic. Car starts up and runs fine, but tried it again this morning and still it wouldnt budge out of park. I dont know a thing about automatics. Will somebody help me with what to do. Its my daily driver and I need it to commute.

I don't know if this is like newer VAG cars, but if brake light switch goes bad, it won't let you shift out of park. It's a switch under the brake pedal.
I just looked at the fuse block and that relay has a sticker over it stating my model doesnt use a shift lock relay. When I saw that I as ready to light the car on fire as I thought that was the solution.

How do you know if these go bad? Check for brake lights are working?

You can hear a little "click" from around the shifter when you depress the brake pedal in a lot of cars - that's the shifter lock being let off... do you hear that?

Dont think I have EVER heard that. I will go try and see.

The switch you guys are referring to, is it the button like object that sits against the metal cast of the brake arm? And when you let go of the brake it decompresses the button? If so could that be really whats causing all of this?

I don't think we are all on the same page - this switch is internal.. it's the switch that's activated by the brake pedal, a security and safety feature on MANY automatic vehicles that forces you to apply the brakes before shifting out of park.
If you have an owners manual - look up "shiftlock override" or something to that effect. All the cars I've driven have had one, in one form or another (Volvos have an actual button, while my Audi requires some disassembly)
Dont have a owners manual. What is that switch part called? I will just replace it and hope thats going to fix it.

I was under the impression on an 80/90 that the little panel to the lower right of the shift gate could be pried up revealing a shift lock release switch which you put the end of your key into and overriding the shift lock.
"I think that cars today are almost the exact equivalent of the great Gothic cathedrals: I mean the supreme creation of an era, conceived with passion by unknown artists, and consumed in image if not in usage by a whole population which appropriates them as a purely magical object."

I wish, havet seen anything that easy yet.

Yes mine is exactly like that. Except I have the sport button on the bottom right.
And no I cannot shift when the key is turned on and the car is still off.

The shift face panel thing? I lifted it up and didnt see anything where I can enter my key to unlock it.

Keep furiously pumping the brakes while trying to shift. It sounds like you have a bad brake switch/neutral interlock switch. It'll go sooner or later; but replace it ASAP. Welcome to Audi ownership.

He's talking about the rectangular panel, to the right of the 3,2,1. Don't you see how it can be pried up in the photo?
He says his sport button is there, maybe that isn't the over-ride lock (my cars had one there though, I thought.. tiptronic? I could put my key in and pop it out...)
The furious brake pumping might work too.. we need webcams!
Brake pumping And aggressive pumping did nothing. I just dont know what could have happened from the time I was driving and parked it to the time I went to drive again. Yeah I dont know much about these cars. But there are two little cylindrical devices (Plastic) with a button and sensor like setup that press against the iron leg of the brake and when I press the brake they depress and when I let off the brake they compress. Cou ld these two devices be whats bad?
p.s. I am uploading images of all this so you guys will know.

One is the brake light switch. What would the other one be- a cruise control related switch?

Beats me, I thought this was what the thing you guys were talking about earlier on the brake light thing. No?

Yes, for one of them. Not sure about the second one, though cruise control sounds likely.
Do your brake lights work? Did we ever establish that? If the lights aren't coming on, this switch may be bad, and may be causing the tranny lock. Though I swear, there has to be a manual override for that.

Are the wheels pointed straight ahead, or are they turned to the extreme left or right? If so, try turning the steering wheel while depressing the brake pedal.

No they're completely straight forward.

Have you tried calling a dealer or independent shop? They might have some quick fix options for you.
I solved this problem by buying manual...just don't remind me about clutch replacement.
I already tried, the dealers dont have parts and service in on weekends. And all the vw/audi (two in the entire city of SLC) shops are either closing down or dont work weekends.
I will buy a new brake light switch and hopefully that will solve the problem.

Well just checked for brake lights, nothing. With and without the key on or off. So I think its safe to say its that white switch. Yah?
