Nissan and battery partner NEC today announced that operations have begun at a joint-venture start-up company producing lithium-ion batteries for automotive applications. The company, Automotive Energy Supply Corporation (AESC), will operate out of Nissan's Zama facility and should be functional some time in 2009.
That better be true, because in the very same press release Nissan outlines its uses for the Li-Ion batteries: They'll first be used in forklifts and other small commercial vehicles in 2009, but the big news comes in 2010, the year Nissan plans to release a full electric vehicle (perhaps based on the Denki Cube concept) in the U.S. and Japan, along with a fully Nissan-developed hybrid model. By 2012, Nissan plans to launch an electric car globally. Click through for the full press release outlining timetables and those darned money issues.
