The chassis, sans suspension, bucks with sharp jolts over what appears to be a mirror-smooth surface. As I near the end of the front straight, I turn in to clip the apex, apply full throttle, then stab the brake with my left foot to haul the kart down to speed for the hairpin right up ahead. The back end steps out to the left sharply, reminding me that I should save my braking for those brief moments when my kart is actually pointing straight. My forearms, already tired, countersteer quickly to catch the slide and I turn the kart sharply to the right and mash the gas pedal once more. No, I'm not driving a 125-cc shifter kart at Grange Motor Circuit in San Bernardino County or hurling down the straight at Silverstone in a 250-cc superkart. I'm at Dromo One in Orange, California, an indoor karting facility that offers loads of thrills and 40,000 square feet of space to satiate the racing appetite of experienced enthusiasts and novices alike...
Salt Lake City has a decent indoor karting facility (FastKart) and I've raced there a few times with groups of friends. You're right: it is highly addictive and an absolute blast.

None of us are rejecting OHC technology, we just don't accept that it's automatically and intrinsically superior. Especially when it's not.

The scale is very complicated. There was some quantitative change, the specifics of which I am not party to.

Last time I was at indoor speed racing in Lincoln Ne they had the track set up with a long left hand sweeper into a tight s curve. I was having so much fun kicking the tail way out over the sweeper that I would always have to brake way to hard for the s and end up sliding into it sideways and loose a lot of speed

A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.
I go to Umigo in Livermore, CA and love it! It's the newest bay area track, so all of the karts are still new and well taken care of, and the track is nice and wide so you can build up some good speed. It is addicting though, and my wallet's not too happy about my new hobby...
Dromo One is awesome! I went there a few years ago and had a blast with all my friends. I forgot what my lap times were but the track had a real nice layout. Have they expanded or changed the course layout recently?
I helped friends build and manage an Indoor Facility back in the early 90's. Lot's of stories but while most lusted after faster and more powerful karts I always felt the most fun was to be had with a decent size group of skilled karters in the less powerful machines.
Young guys with plenty of cash flow would get addicted thought. You see them daily for a few months till they went into rehab
I haven't driven the electric karts yet, but I'm totally hooked on the gas ones. Unfortunately, our main facility here is in the process of shutting down. The locals are patiently waiting for the owners to reopen somewhere new.
Reliability is relative. Compared to a British roadster, all Volkswagens are reliable.

I went to GoKart Racer in Burlingame last summer and had a blast. I can't imagine a better place for a guy's night out ... followed by dinner and a pub.
A few weeks ago I went karting in Sweden and it was AWESOME! They have tracks all over the place over there, some indoor, some outdoor and some of both. If you ever get the opportunity to go, do it!
We have Kart-2-Kart over here in Sterling Heights(?). It's a blast, but as mentioned before in the thread, it's a little too expensive to be doing more than a few times per year.

I like that joke so much, I want to take it into the Health and Fitness forum and get it pregnant.

The new Kart2Kart is supposed to be re-opening in the old Sam's Club on 14 mile. That's right, almost walking distance from your house.
And close to DSW. I see an afternoon of semi serious racing and deadly serious shoe shopping in the future.
I love karting, and Dromo! I try to get there every time I visit CA. Lately all I've thought about is converting the local abandoned supermarket into an indoor track and an outdoor loop, using electric karts. Would be so much fun! How much $$ would I need to start something like that (nevermind the lease on the building)?
Obviously you have not experienced the pleasure of racing/tracking you own car . Karting is a f'in bargain, I think I'l be joining a league this winter.

We have Grand Prix New York here. I was thinking of going next week actually.
I went last weekend for the first time... twice. Me and a friend plan on trying to make it out there every weekend for the rest of the summer. Now I just need to find a place in upstate NY for while Im at school. I swear Im not addicted.

True that! Went to Dromo 1 a couple weeks ago on a saturday night and then straight to Hooters down the street. The A squad there is definitely worth the trip!
karting is good clean fun. I wish there was a track where you could try out the mini motorcycles too. Yes, you look retarded on one, but 40-50mph on something that small would be a blast I bet.

Surely we can figure out how to auto-ban anybody who recommends a VW to someone looking for reliable transportation.
F1 BOSTON is awesome i have only gone a cople times but it sure left an impression
x2 Got completely hooked on that place when I discovered it. Indoor track is pretty cool though i think its better to go when there are less people running in a particular session. Lots of traffic can be really annoying plus its really hard to pass since the track is tight and the karts are pretty wide. Plus most people dont really pay attention to the flags which causes a lot of back up. But overall, is really fun..........but the $$ is whats stopped me from going
Their outdoor track is UNBELIVEABLE, though you can't run the full course unless you have your own shifter kart. Estimated speeds of 100+ mph at the end of the big stragiht with some of the karts
I haven't been to Dromo in over a year but it looks like they added a rollbars and seatbelt. lol I'm guessing that's in response to people who think K1 is "safer".

I'll meet you there...the best way to avoid GPNY's prices is to do the 4 races for $80 deal that they have. Otherwise it's like 30 bucks a race...for about eight minutes
Plus, I love your jetta, so I'll get to see that in the flesh after oogling over it in pictures

i love indoor carting in an age when most cars are so detached from the road -- with all the safety features, sound insulation, and vague steering/handling -- carting overloads your senses and fills that void quickly. carting is addictive
Chicago Indoor Racing is where i go, in buffalo grove - and they're opening up a new location in september, in addison
it is true that for the casual enthusiast, arrive-and-drive races can get expensive. the smart guys buy the race packages -- making it a fun, affordable and highly visceral sport
too bad us slightly 'thick' guys will never reach the speeds or post the track times of the thinner racers... damn midwest diet - ha
K1 Speed junkie here. Unfortunately the closest one to me is about 90 miles away so I don't get there too often. Hopefully someone will build a decent facility a lot closer to home soon.
I never won any trophies playing sports as a kid, so I am pretty proud of this one that sits on my shelf that I won racing against 10 of my closest friends, most of whom are fairly good drivers with a decent amount of track experience:
Of course they claim I had an unfair advantage since I (practically) have a go-kart at home in my garage. Sore losers...
One thing though - I am envious of the kids these days who have an opportunity like this to hone their racing skills and maybe make a career out of this someday. When I was growing up the idea of this kind of go-karting environment was just a pipe dream. The stuff we had available were mostly toys compared to these newer karts and timing systems. Lucky them.
