We just got back from a long day of driving, filming and photographing Chevy's new Corvette ZR1 at their Milford Proving Grounds. Driving impressions are embargoed till August so we can't talk about impressions yet, however we can put up more photos and video. So here is one of the videos we recorded of a hot lap with GM Test Engineer Jim Mero driving. Jim was the one that drove the ZR1 on the Nurburgring at 7:26 seconds. He told us he had run about 50 laps at the Nurburgring over a 2-3 week period before setting that time. He also mentioned the ZR1 can only do about 4 laps of the 14-mile long Nurburgring before it runs out of fuel.
The You Tube link to our first teaser video is here:
Watch the radio cable link on Jim's helmet going nearly horizontal at times if you want to understand just how hard this car corners. You can also see how violent the acceleration is by the physical movement of both Jim and Stu in the car.
The You Tube link to our second teaser video is here:
Despite what Jalopnik has to say, we did indeed drive the car. Both on the track and on the street. Unfortunately, driving impressions are embargoed until mid-August.
The ZR-1 sounds awesome. I remember the ride I got in a Z06 last year around a little course and I thought that car was brutal I can't imagine the ZR-1 Mike
"Ferraris are serious cars for serious people who drive around wearing a serious expression. The Gallardo can do serious, too. It has Audi electrics and Audi engineering. But as you careen towards the next bend on a wave of extraordinary sound, half blinded by your own upholstery, you’ll be making the noise of a howler monkey and wishing you were naked" The one and only Jeremy Clarkson

Did they let you have your way with it? I'm just wondering how much freedom they give journalists out there at the proving grounds.

I like that joke so much, I want to take it into the Health and Fitness forum and get it pregnant.

Make Hermione's clothes fall off, unless you're some sort of half-ass wizard
and that's all that matters. If he had a magic genie in a box and said wa da ya think and the genie said tranny crapped out bam its been seen 89 dollar to zobra the great.
Again: Yeah, being able to turn in 7:26 laps at the Nurburgring really sucks.
This is that guy, folks. He knows what he's doing.

Did you say 7:26? Yes, that is very fast.
In any event, that video looked awesome. I had the opportunity to pilot an automatic C6 around a small autocross circuit last year and even that was a blast. I can only imagine what this beast would be like to drive! I would like to thank Motive for posting the video. It was great to watch. It made me want to go out and take my car for an aggressive drive. It's interesting to me that GM would allow this type of footage out before you are even allowed to talk about the car.

They asked that no one fully deactivate stability control, but that's about it. Competition mode is pretty lenient anyway.
The funny thing is that the amount of training and clearance for any actual GM employee to drive on the MRC is just silly. But, they just let a bunch of journalists go nuts. Double standard.
I drove past the MRC a billion times on my way in to the grounds, but I never so much even tried to venture over there. Securitas seemed to frown on that. Glad you guys had a blast!
'02 330i Did the Germans invent power steering, or did they just get it right?

They might not have given them free reign over the entire thing... or they might've put some cones up at certain points on the track to keep the speeds down.

It's like the Car Lounge version of the Holy Trinity-the hatchback, the diesel, and the holy clutch pedal.
