When Audi introduced the B8-platform A4, we knew it was just a matter of time until the next S4 arrived. The ins and outs of the B8, with its front axle moved forward, lower steering rack, and high-strength body shell, are already known, so the big news that the S4 brings to the table is the model's return to six cylinders and forced induction.
What does that mean for you? It means a three-liter supercharged TSFI engine with 333 horsepower and 325 lb-ft of torque, 0-60 in 5.1 seconds, and "significantly improved" fuel economy. It will be bolted up to a six-speed manual or a seven-speed "S tronic" transmission. The quattro® all-wheel-drive system retains its 40% front, 60% rear torque split, but the rear diff can be upgraded to a quattroSport piece that varies torque distribution laterally. The S4 will also be available with Audi Drive Select, which varies the engine, transmission, steering, and suspension damping characteristics to suit the driver's preferences.
The new S4 will go on sale in Fall of 2009, with pricing similar to the outgoing model. Unlike the B7 S4, however, the station-wagon Avant model will not be arriving on our shores.
Ingolstadt – Audi is introducing its new sporty top models in the midsize class – the S4 and the S4 Avant. Their engine, a three-liter V6 with direct fuel injection and mechanical turbocharging, delivers a powerful 245 kW (333 hp). It accelerates the S4 to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in just 5.1 seconds, but on average only uses 9.7 liters of fuel per 100 km (24.25 US mpg). The quattro permanent all-wheel drive system transfers its power to the road in style, which is then converted by the sport suspension into dynamic handling. Upon request, Audi can equip the new S4 and S4 Avant with innovative technologies that further increase their lead over the competition. The seven-speed S tronic changes gears with lightning speed, and the new sport differential distributes the torque as needed between the rear wheels. The new Audi S4 will be unveiled to the public for the first time at the Paris Auto Show from October 2 to 19.
Badging it as 3.0T is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO lame. I dig the rest of the car though. I wish there were a bit more aggressive fender flares, but I guess that's only for the RS4.
For the most part. If memory serves, it's also the cucumber capital of Japan. Hence the home-market ads for the FT-86 featuring Takeichi-kun, the cartoon cucumber whose meteoric rise through the underground drift world has shamed him in the eyes of his school-master.
It looks so... sedate. How about a little more flair?
"Office Space" FTW.
All fellow members of the Roman senate hear me. Shall we continue to build palace after palace for the rich? Or shall we aspire to a more noble purpose and build decent housing for the poor? How does the senate vote?
Is it just me or does this look the same as a normal A4?
thats pretty much the S4's MO. im sure theres little bits to differentiate, but dont expect much.
i think it looks great. glad to see FI is back in audi's cars

But that would only happen in my magical dreamworld, where VW dealers were a Charlie and the Chocolate Factory-like experience, everything had 4Motion and only cost $12K, and the ORLY owls were my co-pilots.
WHY DO YOU(AUDI and VW with the GTI & R SERIES) CONTINUE TO TRAIL YOUR COMPETITORS AND WHY CANT YOU SET THE BENCH MARK ESPECIALLY WHEN YOUR INTRODUCING YOUR PRODUCT UP TO 2 YEARS AFTER THE COMPETITION?
THIS IS UPPER CASE LETTERING SO VAG MIGHT BE ABLE TO READ IT AND IT WILL BE 1 LESS EXCUSE THEY CAN USE.
jesus you are an annoying individual. did it not cross your mind that people might be looking for more fuel efficient cars? also, the S4 is simply not a competitor for the cars you listed. the RS4 is. the S4 will line up with the likes of the 335. wow both f/i sixes...

I was waiting on official word, because I have been undecided on whether to purchase a b8 S4 or b8 2.0t S-Line. Does the 2.0T S-line offer S-tronic or is it the regular automatic? Also having never driven a supercharger car, I am quite curious on the difference vs turbocharged engines. After having driven a few turbo cars, I cant ever see myself going back to a N/A engine. I just love the boost too much
Audi's competition for all of those cars is the RS4. Which the outgoing model produces 420hp.
I think it looks subtle, which I always thought was the purpose of a S4? and 111hp/L seems like a reasonable number considering this is their mid-level sports model.

Maybe because the S4 competes with neither of those other cars you listed.
Do you? go price a 2008 fully loaded S4 and then go price its competition.....m3, ISF, c63, cts-v etc.
The fact that you can get a 335i FULLY LOADED for $55k is saying you should compare a Boxster FULLY LOADED($75k+) to a Z06!!!!
If the S4 competes with the 335i, and a4 3.2l compares with the 330 then what does the a4 2.0t compare with?
REMEMBER...look at PRICING!!!
There's 2 ways you can look at it. The first is the 3.2L and new 2.0T will essentially both be competing against the 330 in terms of performance. The second is if you want to peg the 3.2L vs the 330 then what you have is Audi with an edge... a good performing car with pretty damn good mileage in this segment (2.0T) that has no natural BMW competitor... yet.
In either case, the S4 and a 335i are very competitive head to head in terms of both price and performance, as are the RS4 and M3.
You can't overlook the lack jack, of any other highway to ride. It's got no signs or dividing lines, and very few rules to guide.
Remember, unless Audi pulls a BMW, there's an RS4 to look forward to.
Which kinda sucks, because the S4 used to be the top dog. Now you have to spend even more and get the RS4. It's just getting ridiculous. Even a standard AMG isn't enough anymore...you gotta get a Black Series.
That said, the new S4 looks like a nice vehicle and the gas mileage looks very respectable considering the power.
Not another tired S4 vs. the world debate that goes on for 6 pages No one ever complains that CLK550 is $10k more than 335i but god forbid S5 or S4 is slightly more expensive than the 3. Those that are sensitive to $2~3000 price difference are driving bargain cars like the G37 anyway. They won't be shopping for a S4.
333 hp is likely underrated (like the "300hp" 335i) in the grand Audi tradition so until there is instrumented testing from a magazine, everyone just calm down. It could be that the new S4 will be better around the track and faster than the RS4, which means Audi would have restored the balance in the S4 vs. M3 arms race.
Good to see that DSG finally makes it to the S4 although very disappointed to see the Avant is no more. Audi continues to abandon the market niche it dominated (and where the old school Audi supporters who kept the brand alive in the US lives).
i mean not that its isn't enough... u guys know what i am thinking right??!?
with the CTS-V the new M3 the C63, this is audi's answer to all that??? seemed rather weak to me?
and why not the V8, why not the horsepower war, why not price it a bit higher? and most of all, why silently changing the V8 back to a V6? it's like it just gave up or sumthin... or simply said, i quit...
to me S4 is a special car, unlike say, a 335i.... and i've always thought the S4 is a direct competitor to an M3, and the uber RS4 is to an CSL etc.... but now it just seemed to me that Audi simply gave up on trying or sumthing... i am hugely disappointed..

as for the Boster, HELL NO, i chose a volvo s60 over a boxter (when i had to chose between the two as a daily car) cuz honestly i don't consider the boxter to be a porsh (to me it's ugly and very slow, it's just for the name people buy it. )
The RS badge has always been meant for ultra low production very high performing sportscars/sedans.
The M badge has been more mainstream and obviously is a high performing version but hardly ever a ultra low production model.
The CSL/Alpina/Dinan is more along the same idea as the RS models.
If not then what does Audi have to compete with the CSL/Alpina/Dinan and in Merc's case....THE BLACK SERIES!!

ill say it again since you obviously didnt read the thread. the S4 isnt competing with the M3, the C63, the IS-F or the CTS-V. that is the job of the out-going RS4. you know, the expensive, V8-powered car?

I think Audi makes a gorgeous car and there is no real reason to change a great design, but I just feel that their styling is long in the tooth. Honestly this isn't that different from the B6 which is how old now, and then B5 was around for how long. It just feels like the A4 doesn't look like it has differentiated/grown in its design language in the past 15 years or so.
