The last time BMW dropped a new 7-series on us, we stood there stunned and unsure of what to make of the strange new shape before us. Almost universally loathed by armchair critics who could no doubt never afford one, the fourth-generation 7 that made its debut in 2001 would prove to be the most successful version to date. Furthermore, competitors have imitated its most controversial design elements, particularly the so-called "Bangle Bustle" trunkline. Now, seven years later, BMW is sending us an entirely new 7, but this time they've gone without the shock and awe campaign. Instead, the 2009 7-series builds on the foundation its predecessor laid down with more graceful design details and with even more cutting-edge technology...
No offence Motive, but it really sounds like BMW paid you off to write a good review.
Frankly, the only thing I remotely like about the new 7 is the styling of the engine cover - but since I'm a design aficionado, the rest of it does nothing for me. They somehow managed to take the ugly previous-generation 7 and make it bland without making it any less hideous.

This is a really nice car and I think all of the haters will be drooling over it when they see it on the road. I think the exterior styling is a bit off, yes, but it seems to have extraordinary dynamics and an exotic selection of interior materials.

Why can't it just be a good car? Go drive one when they arrive here and get back to us. Maybe you'll change your name to Entwerfer des BMWs.
In regards to the looks, I wasn't a big fan at first, either. The pictures here and in the photo gallery linked to the story do a lot more for me and Bryan tells me the car is one of those that really comes alive in person. As complex as some of the details are, I believe him.

Lol Ian, contrary to popular belief here, bmw CAN make a good car.

I don't deny either, my point is that at the moment BMW's styling department (IMO) has failed horribly in their attempts to design a nice looking car. I'm not referring to the dynamics, as I haven't driven this and don't plan to. I will say that it has potential to look a bit better in person, but with the Bangle-influenced design language, I don't think they're on the right path. Of the three German luxury automakers (Audi, BMW, MB), I think Audi is overall on the best route in terms of styling (specifically looking at the A5/S5, A8/S8, and Q5), I think BMWs were quite nice but Bangle came along and ruined them for me, and with MBs I think Chrysler didn't do them any favours - too much chrome and plastic.
I'm not saying there's no potential, but I think Audi's designs have much more potential to become classics than what the others are putting out at the moment.

Rolls-Royce features on the big Bimmer FTW! That is such a cool idea. Sounds like you guys liked the car. I am still warming up on the looks, but the write up makes it seem like it's "the bar" again.
I didn't think I would like the Mercedes CL either. And I wasn't too impressed with the original Audi R8 press shots. Trust me, in black this car will be quite a looker.

Butting in here...
While I agree that Audi has the best design direction right now, it is getting old very quickly. I am starting to understand what the BMW fanboys mean when they say they can never tell the Audi sedans apart. But most of all I am disgusted with the latest Audi interior designs. What happened to the elegance and the simplicity? To make matters worse it seems as if they have lost their way with materials. The center console couldn't look much cheaper. It's like they don't care at all any more; every car they have released since the 2004 A6--except for the TT and R8--have had the same exact boring interior design.

Excellent points, I thought the CL looked horrible and the R8 was nothing special. In person the R8 knocked my socks off and I love the way the CL looks.
Well, it's bland and boring alright, but at least it isn't the blasphemy the last gen 7-series (and much of Bangle's previous designs) was. I guess years of Bangle-bashing from all over the world is finally sinking in?
Is it just me, or did that article suck? Using the word flagship, even in quotes, destroys any credibility.

x2
The debut of the 2001 7 brought this car leaps and bounds ahead of its competitors in design. The car looked so refined and calculated.
this one, by comparison, looks like they took the original and let it sit in the sun for a few days until it heated up and melted slightly, softening all the intensity off of the original.
A pic of the *slightly* updated 2003(?), for comparison, because I still think it's the prettiest of this iteration.

Set for release in 2009... in the month of Nevuary
While the car doesnt look audi A8 perfect, it does look good, and IMO worlds better than the previous version. I Also am esstatic that BMW decided to make the interior more like a car again rather than an interface console.
I wasn't a huge fan of the 745i when it came out, but after they tweaked a few things in the 750i, I really liked it. I like this one even more, I love the design.

glad to see bmw is making an attempt at catching up with the A8....though I think it will come up short as usual
....Maybe in terms of your opinion. The BMW driving dynamics will undoubtedly surpass the A8. I love both cars, but I don't feel that BMW was aiming to "catch up" with the A8, especially with sales numbers being considered.

I was going to point that line out myself. Another reason why I usually avoid Motive.
I sometimes wonder if an editor has bothered to look at some of the writing.
The current Mercedes Benz S-Class was a massive leap forward in comparison to its' W220 predecessor; the same can be said about the current Lexus LS. This new 7-series, on the other hand, looks more like a refresh of the current model. After seeing BMW go for such radical design changes throughout this decade, this car is somewhat of a letdown. Is Bangle & crew not sure where to take BMW in terms of next generation styling? As for the Audi A8, I still think its a great looking flagship sedan that has aged extremely well. I just hope Audi designed the next A8 to be much more bold and progressive in exterior design than what we've seen with the new A4 (hopefully it's designed by the same guy who did the A5).

Are you suggesting that the vast majority of Car Loungers can afford a 7 Series? My point, obviously, was that most of the people who were overly critical of the last car's design weren't in the market for one anyway. Meanwhile, it went on to sell better than any previous 7 despite (or perhaps because of) its controversial design.
I don't mind criticism of our writing at all, but you're essentially criticizing our point of view.
