Every decade or so, General Motors throws a stupid-fast, totally discreet and unexpected turbocharged monster out of left field. These gifts to the enthusiast world — declarations that if the company weren't so broke, maybe all of its cars could be awesome — have come in various shapes and sizes. Today, we've got the Chevy Cobalt SS, which dominated a group of its peers on the track in our recent Turbo Toyboxes comparo. In the Eighties, a most unexpected candidate wore Buick Regal body panels, but the Grand National certainly wasn't an old lady's car. ( We wrote about that car, too.) But now, let's talk about the GMC Syclone, which fits in between those cars and spent the early Nineties beating Ferraris.
Sealed-beam headlights and craptastic 90's styling lose me, but I've heard stories about this thing told in tones usually reserved for horrible shark attack stories and descriptions of space exploration.
A bud of mine has a 800=hp and it is insanely fast. He has upgraded everything in it.
O and it's could be for sale if anyone is interested
R...E.....shut up we get it....
I either carry my XD-45 or Kel-Tec .380. Depends on what I'm wearing... the XD-45 is a little large to conceal when wearing shorts. Extra ammo in a backpack in the trunk. Those goddamned zombie bastards aren't going to kill themselves. That's why. - medicracer
I have owned two Syclones, I still wake up in the middle of the night with memories of these trucks absolutely destroying everything on the street except a 900hp supra. Really good trucks too. I have endless stories myself but they really have an interesting history to them as well. this was #2 32k miles almost flawless and daily driven!
My goal is to park one of these in my driveway before I turn 40.
Ive always loved them and got a ride in a Ty that to this day I still remember vividly as we left a worked 5-liter Mustang for dead from a stop. Great piece of writing as always. It was an enjoyable read. GM did it right with these trucks.

TCL Serendipity: I was driving with my sister just yesterday and we passed a ratty lookin' used car lot in Northeast PA, where a red/gray Typhoon has been languishing in a far corner since the turn of the 21st Century. Sis wouldn't believe me that this faded, neglected, boring and boxy SUV (of which she's seen countless in Blazer/Jimmy form falling apart on the highways and byways of the Northeast) could spank Ferraris in its day.
. . . which makes me want to buy it, just to show the young'un that I wasn't just making things up
Edit for TCL obscuromaniacs: the ratty-ol' used car lot in question also has, as of yesterday afternoon, a Chevy SS454 pickup, a Datsun 510, a Dodgesubishi Conquest, and a Focus SVT all hidden behind two rows of Vanilla-brand FWD sedans and Soccermom SUV's.

My uncle has both a pristine (under 20k mile) Syclone and Typhoon that he bought new.
When I was 16 and my cousin and I spent an afternoon out ripping it up and scaring ourselves silly in the Syclone. They had just come out and nobody knew what they were.
We dusted all manner of Camaro, Chevelle, Mustang, and anyone else that was game to take on two easily entertained teenagers in a little black truck.

We have no Great War. No Great Depression. Our Great War is a spiritual war. Our Great Depression is our lives. We've all been raised on television and to believe that one day we'd all be millionaires, movie gods, and rock stars. But we won't. And we're slowly learning that fact. And we're very, very pissed off.
My little sister has a '94 Chevy S-10 SS with the same engine in it. Except the little truck she has the posi rear end and is much lighter than the Typhoon/Syclone. That pickup gets up and goes! I love the 4.3L V6.!
/||/ Chitizown reppin' it yo man g-thang ribble dibble dabble hittin a pancake with a gavel!
Oh-ho-ho-ho no. I'm keeping this one firmly under my hat. Along with my student-loan checks, or as I like to call them, my "Typhoon Preservation Fund".
I have owned two S-10s of this vintage. Man they were fun trucks.
BUT, nothing can rival the biblical carnage that rust can cause on this body. It is AMAZING how fast it progresses. One day your noticing a small blister under the paint, the next day the entire quarterpanel has fallen off the car while it was parked.
At one point there was a taillight I had to support only with some brackets I made out of perforated metal strap. Nothing of the body remained there, just glass, rubber, LOTS of rust, a HUGE hole, and a well secured taillight in mid air.
These posted examples must have been stored in vaccums.
I had an 87, kind of a beater
I also had a 93 with the Vortec 4.3 and it was a NASTY motor. good looking too.
