Motive First Steer: 2010 Mazda3 « » 11:49 AM 11-19-2008
They'd better not screw this car up. That's all I can think on my flight out to Los Angeles where, on the eve of that city's annual auto show, I'll be driving the new 2010 Mazda3. The current car, in its fifth and final year on the market, it still Motive's favorite car in the small sedan segment, despite the fact that each one of its competitors has been revised in the meantime. That's because all of those other cars — Civic, Corolla, Focus, Cobalt, Sentra, and so on — aren't much fun. Even the Mitsubishi Lancer, which shares its roots with the devilish Lancer Evolution, isn't as emotionally gratifying as the aging 3. No sir, Mazda better not mess with such a winning formula.

Quote » Ignoring the design changes, if the 2010 Mazda3 looks like it's the same size as the old car, that's because it is. The wheelbase, width, height, and interior volume go basically unchanged, while overall length stretches by about three inches. But here's the good news: Thanks to high-tensile steel and a few structural changes, the 2010 Mazda 3i is 90 pounds lighter with a manual transmission and about 80 pounds lighter with an automatic, despite the fact that the old four-speed has been replaced by a new unit with another gear. Mazda3s models are unfortunately about 50 pounds heavier than their predecessors, with the automatic version just breaking the 3000-pound barrier at 3025 pounds.

Looks great! The curb weight is a bit disappointing though. Isn't that quite a bit more than a comparable Civic/Corolla, etc.?Quote, originally posted by PassSedanGLX » The correlation between current/former Volkswagen ownership and being an impolite douche-canoe is in the mild-positive range.

I think I can get used to that front end. It looks rather different but it's bold and not completely out of character like the Acura TL. Base '09 Corolla: ~2750lbs Base '09 Civic 4DR: ~2650lbs. (EX/GX and Si models are ~2900)
So yes and no.

I have to say that with the interior, Mazda has done a much better job incorporating the sweeping lines and shapes than Honda did with the Civic. When it first launched, the 3s had some wonderful colors -- then they got all depressing as the years went on.

Cool, thanks.
I double checked the Civic numbers just cuz I was curious and it looks like the EX & EX-L are closer to 2800 lbs., which is pretty significant IMO.

Either way, the 3 still looks like a winner to me!

Well, you've got red. Not just one, but two kinds of red. Those are available on top-line models only. Then there's black, gray-blue, gray-periwinkle, light gray (silver), dark gray (graphite), and gray with the brightness and contrast maxed out (white).
It would be nice to see a palette that didn't resemble the color schemes of Soviet apartment blocks, I must admit.

Looks like a winner. Wish it didn't look so wedge-shaped tho - why do cars have to look so wedge-shaped these days? Power is knowledge. Let's have a conversation on values: http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=4539948

That front disappoints, tails aren't great either and the interior looks cold. I'm sure its a great car but hope the hatch is better... "My car has a cold air intake in the winter."
