If you read our first drive of the 2010 Mazda3 Sedan you probably picked up on the note that the sedan and hatch will go on sale together in the first quarter of next year, and that the hatch will be shown at a European show, that being the five-door's biggest market. But wait, isn't the next big European show Geneva? And isn't that in March? It makes no sense!
Well, we got to the bottom of that issue by sitting down for dinner this week with Mazda's PR staff. The Mazda3 five-door won't debut at Geneva but instead the Bologna show taking place on December 3-14. All you Mazda fans can mark it down on your calendar. However, the new line up still won't be complete after that debut, with the Mazdaspeed variant still hiding. Maybe Mazda could show that one at Geneva.
For the most part. If memory serves, it's also the cucumber capital of Japan. Hence the home-market ads for the FT-86 featuring Takeichi-kun, the cartoon cucumber whose meteoric rise through the underground drift world has shamed him in the eyes of his school-master.
It made no sense whatsoever that the hatch was not reveal at LA Autoshow with the sedan. Almost every Mazda3 I see here is the hatch... it sells much better than the 4 door. I don't understand why they split up the debut.

Its all about the coverage. The hatch brings in more worldwide interest than the sedan. In the states, exact opposite.

I see a huge number of hatches here too. I would guesstimate 40% of 3's here are hatches.

Marketing 101. Just like releasing bad news on a Friday, giving the hatch a separate debut keeps the Mazda3 in the headlines longer.
