Bone stock, the current Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution isn't just a damn fine machine — it's one of the meanest, most entertaining rides for the money. But the way we see it, the Evo is 50 percent awesome, 50 percent blank canvas. After all, 291 hp is impressive for a production four-banger, but decades of tuners have proven that turbo'd Mitsubishis are capable of numbers far more outrageous. The new all-aluminum 4B11 motor is no exception. The Evo X is a good handler, too, so long as you're comfortable with a touch of body roll — but it could be better. And lighter, considering an Evolution MR weighs just a smidge under 3600 pounds.
The proper thing to do in this situation would be to go fetch a new Evo, tear it apart, and report on building it back up to superhero form. But lacking the time, funds, or space in our project car garage, Motive decided to do the next best thing: find one of the most impressively tuned Evos on the road and take it for a spin.
Don't miss the gallery link off to the right at the top of the article page. Along with a whole lot more side-by-side Evo pictures, it includes a few shots inside AMS with gems like this baby:

Wish I could see those at work. Our filter blocks any link with the words album, gallery, etc.

Those of you who frequent our Car Lounge forums are probably familiar with Ryan Gates's octane blue Evolution, though it may look slightly different here, sitting still with all four tires on the ground. He had all his engine work done at AMS Performance in West Chicago, Illinois, which happens to be where I've met up with him.
Nice article, but I would have liked a spec sheet listing the mods all in one place. You should do more comparisons like this with mods listed and comparisons of braking and acceleration times.
This makes me want to mod my own car.

This is TCL, the bastion of hatred and ill feelings.

Ryan has a full listing in the "Car Bio" section of his website: http://gates311.com/
Thanks for the article Stu! It was fun to do some back to back driving of the cars, pretty crazy what just a few mods will do. The Evo X has impressed me soooooooo much more than I expected, and I think it's surprised most people with it's potential so far.
One thing to note, the car has 8,214 miles (7,250 on TRACK) on it and has had 0 mechanical issues. With 450+ whp on a conservative tune, the engine runs amazing....on a 100% stock OEM longblock! Thanks to AMS for the safe, powerful tune and Mitsu for the incredibly capable Evo X and 4B11T

Like Stu said, the Car Bio page on http://www.Gates311.com has everything listed. If anyone has any questions, let me know!
I got the opportunity to test drive a MR a few months back. Really fun car, can't imagine what Gates' is like.
Just saw this. This was the first time I drove an MR and it's pretty much what I expected. It felt a little more soft, and would be a very very fun daily driver. I know some people have started to track MR's, I'd be curious to drive a modded one on track to see the true potential of the TC-SST trans. Anyone wanna trade for a day???
