I was thrilled to finally see him in concert in late '07. He had a friggin' painter on stage with him painting pictures to illustrate each song. No joke. The guy was like Bob Ross on speed.

this ****ing sucks. when did rock get so ****ing gay. enough already. its bad enough when politics are infused with this stuff, but its worse when its gay crap like this. and you know the way im using the word gay, it has naught to do with sexual orientation. singing about this stuff is just lame. the day zeppelin comes out with an album about the rainforests, i'm switching to country.

Back in my day, rockstars were walruses, eggmen, and custard would drip from dead dogs' eyes, and we didn't need no education, back when a man could still drive his chevy to the levy! Back when you could never tell if a man's bowtie was a camera or just a bowtie! Back when a man could fight the law, and lose! Back when Jonny, still had a lust for life! God, I miss those days of rock and sometimes, I want them, I want them so baaaaaaaaad, it's driving me mad! It's! Driving! Me! Mad!
and you know the way im using the word gay, it has naught to do with sexual orientation.
An acceptable word to substitute for it that I've found handy is "twee". The Brits use it often, as in "How very twee that car looks."
Please read my first published article in the February 2010 Chevy Enthusiast magazine (page 37; "Zora Arkus-Duntov And Five Easy Corvettes"). Link: http://www.amosautomotive.com/ Thanx!

Its not that bad. The lip synching and the earphones plugged into the apple in the video is Neil taking a shot at Apple/I-tunes. He's having a very public feud with them for those who don't know:
Neil has been my favorite music artist for 30 years, so his politics don't really bother me even though I disagree with some of his statements.
One thing that is pretty clear is that he expresses his opinions and music with no thought as to any adverse impact on his sales. He records whatever music he wants with little regard as to the commercial viability. Some of his stuff over the years has been a little off the wall, but you say to yourself "that's just Neil" and wait for the next one which more often than not is a home run. He has a tendancy to jump back and forth pretty easily between different styles like rock with Crazy Horse, acoustic folk music , and country.

Well, that just sounds gay . Actually it sounds like an incomplete word or like you're trying to mimic the sound a bird makes.
I also disapprove of an entire album about eco-friendly cars. A few songs I could live with but making an entire about about one subject seems silly and contrived to me. I'm not a Neil Young fan though so it really has no effect on me.
We need a TCL Regional Forum so CLICK HERE and vote in favor of it.

Dude, he is a hippy. I love the guys music and realize that it was not a mistake that he was in Crosby Stills Nash and Young. The guy likes his cars but is also of the hippy breed. Dont take it personally.
And Zepp has not been Zepp since bono.

I think that's too subtle. If I'm going to do it, I'm just going to get a sticker that says "My other ride has a beard."

I used to work with a guy who had an Allroad. A couple months after he got it, his wife got ovarian cancer. 'Nuff said.
To keep this a little on topic with cars. Neil is a huge fan of American 50's cars.
I read a biography called "Shakey" ,that was very good by the way, and he has found many a rusty hulk that appealed to him for some reason and then spent big money getting them restored with no regard for the value of the finished car. His first car was a 1948 Buick Roadmaster Hearse named Mortimer and he still gets very nostalgic talking about it and laments not keeping it all those years. You almost get the feeling that he thinks he really let Mort down after the car had done so much for him.

Give me a break, Ohio was recorded 38 years ago; did you expect an artist to record the same stuff forever?
No, give me a break. A GD'ed concept album? First, they're almost always self-indulgent works of crap. Second, the subject matter is going to be about eco-friendly cars. WHAT IN THE NAME OF ANY DIETY YOU DO OR DON'T BELIEVE IN DOES THAT HAVE TO DO W/ ANYTHING RELATED TO ROCK AND ROLL? If it's released only in elevators, fine. If it's supposed to be taken seriously as a work of "art", honestly, the amount of pretentiousness makes Sting and Bono seem like beer-swillin', Confederate Flag flyin' NASCAR fans
No, I really don't care how my post hurt your feelings. Leave them at the door or go tell a mod. - I quote myself

in your day? child please. I got a decade on you and I wouldn't dare spout some banter like that.
He has done many concept albums over the years, so this is nothing new. The latest example from a few years ago was Greendale which was about a fictitional family in a fictitional small town.
He also did a country album with Willie Nelson, a do w*p album with his band the Shocking Pinks, and a blues album with his band the Bluenotes, so to categorize him a a rock artist only is not accurate. This latest one may be a little indulgent according to some, but so what? He has enough stature in the industry to be able to make something he wants to do without necessarily planning on it being a blockbuster.
Face it, the guy has survived in his business for over 40 years while recording the music he wants without resorting to an "oldies" tour; not many other musicians can make that claim which is one reason he has become an icon of the music industry. Even if you don't like his music , fine, a lot of people don't, but you should at least respect him for what he has accomplished while staying true to himself.
The thing about music is that there is something out there for everyones taste; if you don't like something than you don't have to listen to it. Go find something else you do like instead.

Yes, Southern Man, Fortunate Son, and Born in the U.S.A had nothing to do with politics at all.

Concept albums are great. Pink Floyd is almost all concept albums and they're all amazing. David Bowie? Alice Cooper? Mastodon? Come on.
Neil Young is more of a folk singer/song-writer than a rocker. Come on!

I think a major problem is musicians take themselves too seriously. What ever happened to just enjoying music? I say this as a player. I know so many players that think they are the most important person in the world. Even the one who's only gig is the "Open Mic Night" at a local restaurant.

I have nothing against political songs, but singing about Vietnam or civil rights is one thing... singing about environmental cars... kinda lame .
And I'm a Neil Young fan.

That album has probably my favourite Neil song... Ordinary People. Even has a lyric about the auto industry:
Down on the assembly line, they keep puttin' the same thing out. But the people today, they just ain't buyin'. Nobody can figure it out. Well, they try like hell to build a quality end, They're workin' hard without a doubt, They're ordinary people. And the dollar's what it's all about. Hard workin' people. But the customers are walkin' out. Lee Iacocca people. Yeah, they look but they just don't buy. Hard workin' people.

this thread is doomed. old timers bitching about the olden days and whippersnappers acting like they were there for Rust Never Sleeps. artists change and evolve. of all people, Neil Young should not be pigeonholed. get over it. he doesn't care what you think.

I may be a young whipper snapper (by Neil Young discography standards anyways), but I'm from Winnipeg so I feel like I'm entitled to my opinion.
