I recently saw this mini-article on Autoblog http://www.autoblog.com/2009/0...-pdk/ and it reminded me of how much I love (and have always loved, since they came out) Porsche Boxsters. So post up pictures of Boxsters (and Caymans too!). Stock, modded, whatever...let's see some!
i really liked the original concept version of this car...while i love the boxster, it somehow just didn't quite translate into a production car how i hoped it would
(yes, these are scale models, but its the best pic i could find to show what i mean)
when they first came out, i fell victim to the "omg, fake porsche for poor people" syndrome.
luckily i grew up quickly and no longer belive such silly things and really really love the boxster.
that's funny because I was the exact same way. I didn't have change of heart till I autocrossed one, now I'm a believer (although I still hate them for the convertible top. I loathe convertibles)
For the most part. If memory serves, it's also the cucumber capital of Japan. Hence the home-market ads for the FT-86 featuring Takeichi-kun, the cartoon cucumber whose meteoric rise through the underground drift world has shamed him in the eyes of his school-master.
Love 'em, but jeez they can get expensive when you start adding a few decent options. A decently equipped Boxster S with Xenons, sport seats and such is $60K.
^Yeah, but the AWD gives the Veyron an edge in the wet - you ever seen a Tyranosaurus Rex try to cut an apex in the rain? Its ridiculous. With such small front arms, all the weight is at the back, makes him oversteer big time.
They should have just called it a Boxter Coupe anyway. But instead they gave it a new name so they could make it more expensive than it's convertible brother. (But it was engineered first as a convertible!)
I've been taking a loooooong look at used Boxsters lately. It would be a fun toy, but I'm not in a position to pick one up yet. Some day maybe. By that time, used Caymans will hopefully be more plentiful and have come down into current used Boxster territory.

If you want a Boxster's only thread, start your own .
caymans exist because of the boxster you ******. or whatever it is you typed under those asterisks. that is stupid. it is like saying an R32 isn't a golf. just because one has a roof and one doesn't doesn't mean it isn't really the same car. so is an outback not a legacy?
here's some info: The Cayman coupé (project 987c) and the second generation Boxster convertible (project 987) share the same mid-engined platform and many components, including the front fenders and trunk lid, side doors, headlights, tailights and forward portion of the interior.
How do these cars do on the reliability side of things?
I remember the original models had a few issues which were ironed out by around '01/'02?
Mine has been flawless, but it only has 17k. Some people have experienced engine failure(s) from a variety of causes, and that is rumored to be somewhere around 10-20% of owners. Take that for what it's worth. Other than that little bit of fun lurking in the back of your head, there really isn't too much else to worry about. That said, it definitely doesn't have the same quality feel as my IS300, so we'll see how it holds up over the long run.
I'm surprised this car hasn't been swarmed by mod enthusiasts. There is a ton of parts availabe for them in the aftermarket, and a lot of good development work is taking place with the 9x6 engine family to make them more powerful and more importantly, bulletproof. Last month's Excellence had an amazing story on the 9x6 engine family.
Long and short, go with the 3.2l Boxster S family, and you have the best base to build on.
If I were a complete idiot I would say that I always thought they were extremely underpowered for the price.BUT - I'm not a complete idiot so I recognize how capable and balanced the chassis and drivetrain are. Fabulous drivers car.
Fixed it for you.

I certainly enjoy mine. It is no concours garage queen. She gets daily driven and both my wife and I have driven her on track, as it was intended to be.
Even the CL fave Corvette can't keep up :laugh
And now it is time to leave work and enjoy driving her home. Later!!!

I never really liked the 986, but when the 987 came out I really liked the styling along with the power from the S, but for the money I would most likely rather get a cayman, but wouldnt pass one up if a good deal came along on a 987 s.
