Woman Dies In Violent Crash, BMW Split In Two Posted: 7:32 am EDT June 18, 2009 Updated: 6:30 pm EDT June 18, 2009
ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. -- According to witnesses, a 23-year-old woman driving a BMW was speeding and swerving in and out of traffic early Thursday morning and lost control then crashed into two trees. "It was a BMW. It was split, literally, in two separate halves. Clearly indicative of speed [and] possibly some horseplay going on," said Corporal Kris Neutzling, Florida Highway Patrol. The impact of the crash that happened on Dr. Phillips Boulevard and Conroy-Windemere Road (see map) caused her BMW to split in two, killing Jessica Hazelrigg instantly. AT THE SCENE: Images Show BMW Split In Half VIDEO REPORT: Woman Killed In Violent Crash Hazelrigg's boyfriend, who was driving a separate car, witnessed the crash. Investigators say he was speeding behind her in his Bentley. "It scares me a lot. It scares me a lot," said Tucker Pryor, the victim's friend." A lot of younger people use it to race, because it’s a straight shot." Friends and family of Jessica Hazelrigg were at the crash site Thursday afternoon to pay their respects. Hazelrigg attended Florida State University and graduated from Olympia High School. "It's just a shock. She was such a good person," said Pryor. Jessica Hazelrigg's crash marks the seventh at the intersection of Conroy-Windermere Road and Dr. Phillips Boulevard since January. Last week, a man crashed into a wall after leaving a bar across the street and, last year, a girl crashed into a tree at the same intersection. "You can see people going high-speed all the time," said resident Peter Sushinsky. "You hear a lot of cars going by really fast," said another resident, Simon Sutherland. Troopers are interviewing her boyfriend to find out if he had any involvement in the crash. If they do determine he was involved, he could face charges.
She may have been a good person, but apparently she wasn't a very bright person.

It's like a comic-book charicature of a C1.5 Corvette, set in a retrofuturistic fantasy land where men still wear hats and carry briefcases, but they ride a rocket pack to work.
and I don't even know why Carson Daly has a show..he's like a corpse that occasionally smiles. its as if the NBC programming execs put him on as an inside joke, and they watch reruns of his show on the weekends when they're drunk..
Can someone explain to me why the boyfriend should face any charges? Unless he hit her car, how would he be at fault. Don't get me wrong, I think street racing is stupid, but even if he was, and the person he was racing crashed, that doesn't make it his fault, IMO at least.
Oh those damn trees. Quick get M. Night Shamalama an a copy of The Happening. This must be stopped now.

It's amazing how the way a story is approached can impact the responses. Yes, she was behaving recklessly, but shes dead, and that's not a good thing. But TCL loves to hate people with money! God damn bmw driver and her bentley boyfriend, f**k em, right?
My goodness that car is absolutely mangled. She must have been going very very fast.
RIP
Kev
My car is my mistress. I spoil her with gifts. Cater to her ever need. She keeps satisfying me. Asking me for more. I don't know how to say no. My wallet is my conscience. The friend that tells you she is using you. Needless to say, I'm broke.
Is it possible that she was racing her BMW against her boyfriend's Bentley? Is this a *gasp* street racing accident? I thought only scummy kids with $500 Hondas streetraced!
Reliability is relative. Compared to a British roadster, all Volkswagens are reliable.

This is why we bought a 2007 Rabbit for my wife. She's not a speeder by any stretch, but driving a Rabbit will never give her the impression that she can. RIP poor girl. I'd hate to be the boyfriend and have to witness that then walk upon the carnage. I'm sure she was in the same condition as Porsche girl.
Solution: Make motorsports more affordable for people.
Wouldn't change a thing. This isn't motorsports, this isn't racing, it's stupid young people driving like stupid young people - impulsive, without foresight, unplanned joyriding. I guarantee you it was a spur of the moment thing, they didn't think twice about it and they certainly weren't doing it because they couldn't make it to the track.

What does mike type that isnt funny. Hes like the top resident smart ass of the vortex.
This is a real shame. A major issue in Orlando is simply roads that are too easy to speed on. There are multiple "surface" roads that are 6-8 lanes wide at many points. People think they can get up a large amount of speed on these, only to be reminded that they have to deal with intersections, pedestrians, traffic turning on/off, etc. It's not like Orlando is alone, all of the large cities that deal with huge amounts of urban sprawl have these incidents. While I get pissed off in RI about the main through streets being only 4 lanes, it does keep the speed of traffic down. However, we get youth running through the back roads thinking they are Colin McRae and flying off the road into the woods.
As mentioned above, it is just a factor of youth that many folks have to deal with. Sadly, this girl died from her mistakes.

Unfortunately, hackin' it is a way of life in auto journalism. Hemingway was able to drive an ambulance and write a book; most of these guys couldn't do either.
I'll spell it out for you... she will not be tempted to race down a road at speeds that will rip a car in half. better?
Just about any car is capable of enough speed to rip in half. If your wife is irresponsible behind the wheel (which you've indicated isn't the fact), education is the way to do it (get her on an autocross course).

Why should I do this? She didn't make sure she was out of the car before she hit the rock...

I understand your line of thought, but that MkV Rabbit has a good enough chassis and enough horsepower (almost as much as the e46 325i when talking the hp/lb ratio) to instill too much confidence in just about any young driver and result in the same exact accident as seen here. Your best bet is to get her involved in some sort of HPDE where she can learn about accident avoidance.

It's not like it was too much car for anyone either, only an E46 325i. Sad that someone had to learn the hardest way what not to do.
That is quite a naive statement. You do realize how quick/fast 325s are, 20 years ago it would have kept up with many "muscle/exotic" cars, and I can guarantee you that they were too much car for many of their drivers back then. Just because relatively today they are not the fastest thing on the street, doesn't make them any less lethal in the wrong hands.
