APR vs custom exhaust | « » 2:47 PM 9-11-2009 | |

Is the price of the APR exhaust system worth is or would a custom made system be the same thing? Also I know APR has the exhaust file that you can upgrade your ecu with, what does it do? and if I did use a custom exhaust would running the file have any downsides?

as long as u use a good muffler/res combo, or just a single good muffler, its the same..besides not having a warranty on it, if its stainless and nicely tig welded, i dnt see how u could go wrong..im curious too and im still undecided on what i will do, DP wise as well. i was thinking of getting an ebay pipe and getting a cat welded on..still unsure

could have saved yourself about 60 bux and just gone to a muffler shop and had them weld in a short stainless section where the resonator is.

I am guessing that it will save you some money in the long run, but you have to do a lot of leg work figuring out the logistics of what muffler and such you want. I think the with the premade exhaust kits you are paying for convince as well as shipping.

http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=4533602i have the 42DD res-delete pipe and love it! sounds great and you cant beat it for $100. I tried local shops but to use the same quality material and smooth bends the cheapest i fond was $150. coulnt be happier.

i was looking at pics of our under carriages and i have a sweet idea for an exhaust, but it'd have to be custom..i think i could get one made up for under 450, which is a good price to me..i dnt mind the hassle on finding piping and a welder, thats easy..i believe the hard part is finding someone willing to bend and weld some piping possibly can an EBAY DP (oh no!!) and add a cat, call it a day. prolly will be my project for upcoming spring hopefully the entire TBE would end up costing close to 750$ beats 1200$ and would prolly make just as much power. also what if the exhaust portion from the axle back is 2.5", isnt a lil back pressure needed to keep SOME low end torque

I haven't really put much thought yet into what muffler I would use. I know the custom route would save a lot being in Canada it would be more then the $1400usd to get it up here. I did want the full system as a power adder as well. Since APR claims almost 20hp which would be a nice addition. I just looked at some you tube clips of the resonator delete and it does sound nice. Maybe I'll go that route until I can justify the price of the full system. From what I've always been told some back pressure on an NA car is needed to help with low end power but on turbo cars you want no back pressure so there's nothing slowing down the turbo from spooling I could be wrong though. Any thoughts on the APR exhaust file?

you wont see any real gains from a cat-back set up. thats why i didnt spend the money on the whole thing and just got a the res-delete pipe. If you want power you need the downpipe, and the 20hp gains are probably with a stage2 ECU flash that has been calibrated to the downpipe.

^pretty accurate from everything I have read. The stock exhaust is really good other than the downpipe, which just kind of sucks....
