Other than the obvious E30, Miata and 4.0L what other fun DD are there out there in this price range? I've looked at Wranglers, K5 blazers, Broncos, and a few others. Big or small doesn't really matter to me, anything thats not average.
If you get pulled over before then, then I hope you bring some lube, because you're going to get quite a shocker.
Anyone know the best way to get semen out of a fabric headliner?
If you're looking for pure fun, NA 300ZX. Handles rediculously well, and if you are at all competent with a wrench it wont cost you all that much to keep on the road. Hell my TT was a DD all summer without a problem.

That is awesome. The only way it gets awesomer is if Raptor Jesus is driving and hot naked zombie chicks are hanging onto the sides for dear (un)life.

a k5 would definitely not be my first choice of DD, but you could get a 6.2 diesel K5 and it will get mid 20's mpg and can be turbo'd for more power with the setup from a 6.5 motor. bonus points for a cucv m1009.
Up here in the Rust Belt, a $3000 K5 is probably going to be more trouble (and rust) that it's worth. You also will get tired of the 10mpg it will probably return.
I would recommend an HO (i.e. not Renix) Cherokee. Adequately comfortable (if you keep in mind that it's a Jeep and not a BMW), good power with the 4.0, decent offroad capability in stock trim, endless aftermarket possibilities, tractor-like simplicity and durability, and even with high mileage, they hold their value well enough that you can always get your money out of it if you get bored.
In response to my disdain for the rusted BMW:

No, it's you who don't get it. Different is ok, so long as it's different you approve of. Maybe everyone should seek out your incredibly open minded approval before building anything. maybe you want to pick out our houses, hobbies, clothes, girlfriends, dogs, etc.
There is a 1988 300ZX down the road from me for sale. Its red with matching red interior and t-tops. 5speed and only 117k miles. Its in really nice shape. I've been thinking about it for a while, seems like a good fun car to play with.

Nothing says class like have a sticker that encourages the placing of a finger in the anus of a female.
I drive an old Volvo named Walter, and I think its possessed.
"That's some Ferris Bueller's day off kinda **** right there" (some weird doorman at a bar when we parked nearby). All in reference to my Datsun.
I DD a Miata. I have a dog that requires grooming. I regularly get pedicures. I carry a .357 on my person. I keep a 12 gauge in the trunk. Probably shouldn't judge a driver by their car. Just sayin'.
1999-2003 Mazda Protege...drives like a 4D Miata, great MPGs, good looking, very reliable.
I recommend this car weekly and for good reason
A buddy of mine has one, I don't have anything bad to say about it. He has the 2.0 dohc and it could use some more power, moral of the story is pick up a mazdaspeed protege if you can find one in your price range.

Never mind the 20 speakers, the ****er's got interstellar hyperdrive and it's doing a burnout on the everloving space time continuum! TWIN TURBO WHAT BITCHES
We know you have many choices when it comes to which online forum you like to be made fun of by for your asinine threads. That is why we here at The Car Lounge choose to make fun of you in ways others can't.
Didn't that gen prelude go through the slalom faster than any lambo or ferrari or some retardedly cool fact like that?

Not sure but remember the newly released "VTEC" enabled one (more power than the Si model) to be a great handling top performer at the time.. generation after it carried the tradition..
i think your thinking the previous gen that had 4 wheel steering
Yeah I think that's the one.

really low-mileage and super-clean examples are usually over $5k, but there are a few good ones in the $3-4k price range if you look for 'em. i bought a 98.5 model new, kept it for 3 years, and regretted trading it ever since; so this past july i bought a 98MY example w/ 97k miles and have been more or less dailying it since then. taking into account all the deferred maintenance i inherited with the purchase, i'm into it for not much over $3k.
very fun car to drive....sounds good, reasonably quick, well-balanced handling, great outward visibility, utility of a 4-door sedan body configuration, decent gas mileage (low-20's in town), and pretty unique.

SVT tours are sweet compact sedans. A Lincoln mark 8 has 320 HP you can get a nice one for 4k, and they are comfortable as hell while still plenty of fun and low to mid 20's for gas mileage.
Honest, I wasn't racing. We just happened to be speeding simultaneously.

Mazdaspeed Proteges are nowhere near that price range. You could probably buy a clean Protege 5 and turbocharge it for cheaper than an actual Mazdaspeed.
The Mazdaspeed Protege's suspension package and engine upgrades can basically all be added on to a lesser Protege or P5 through the aftermarket, which is pretty nice. There are a few "Mazdaspeed" P5s running around because of this.
