It seems that automakers are finding a new sweet spot in equipping performance cars with boosted v6's rather than the more traditional v8. I've had both types of engines in cars I've owned, and I'm a serious big cubes fan...or at least was until just lately.
Taking into account performance, fuel economy, maintenance, sound, or any characteristic that is near and dear to you when picking out a performance car (<--- using the term loosely, so one can consider definition stretchers like the Flex Ecoboost), what would you want to see in your next performance car, and why?
Me? After seeing the dynographs and mileage #'s of the new S4 and Ecoboost SHO, I'm leaning pretty heavily toward the boosted v6s.
I think RRAAAAAAWWWWWRRRRR is a better sound than BRRRRRRRRSQUUUEEEEEEEE*whoosh* so V8 for me.

They make some pretty nice sounding V6's now without a turbo.
So I can get a strong V6, plus the sound of a turbo? Yes please.
But for true muscle car noises and torque, I'd really still prefer a V8.

When the midsize Jetta appears in beige, with 10 cupholders and a hybrid option, that year's Waterfest will become an incredibly grisly redux of Jonestown, as thousands of Dubbers commit mass suicide by cutting their wrists on their rusty boser hoods and expire either from blood loss or tetanus...
V8s are slowly but surely disappearing. boosted 6's are a proven platform with notable gains in fuel mileage. I prefer the sound of 8's but they are going the way of the dinosaur.

Muscle car torque = NA V8 ??
So you are stating that modern NA V8 engines make more torque (muscle car levels of torque) compared to modern turbo charged six cylinder engines (with max power output of both engines being equal)?
If that's the case, and is correct, they need to get to work on developing turbo charged six cylinder engines that produce NA V8 levels of torque before they can replace the V8. I was under the impression that blown sixes were already there, but I may be wrong.

vws have a pretty unique modding style...slammed, poke and stretch. A lot of people are not used to that comming from their respected car forums and so they automatically assume its wrong/bad because its different than what they are used to

Is that a joke? I think most people are used to seeing skated economy cars by now.
Don't care. Either works for me as long as the power's there.
I sort of feel the same. Now, many of you may recall me hating on turbos, and I usually do because they usually are bolted to a piddly-ass four banger. I find sixes pull boost off as seamlessly as all motor, so I tend to like those applications. For the sake of argument I voted V8, though, mostly because it is the default N/A option.

Well if you can explain the disparity, please do. I wish more people would come in and explain their reasons. If they don't, I assume they have none. Those people are usually the ones that say "just because", and usually they are fanbois.

It's not just the numbers. It's how you get them and what they feel like while driving. You bolt a turbine to pretty much any motor and it has the potential to make more power than larger engines.

Ok, we're 34 votes in and the biggest argument for NA v8s is the sound. Sure, there's some mention of torks and muscle car history, but it's all about sound for most guys. Interestingly there's little mention of fuel economy (go figure, eh?).
I see myself picking up a B8 S4 in the next 4 years.
I really want one too, but...My pops has a Touareg and I've seen the gas pump punishment that motor dispenses. Remember late 80s Mike Tyson? It's like to your wallet.
