Never mind the 20 speakers, the ****er's got interstellar hyperdrive and it's doing a burnout on the everloving space time continuum! TWIN TURBO WHAT BITCHES
I want it so bad! but i'm having second thoughts now that i have to make the choice. I mean, do you think im missing much by not having tiptronic, and am i getting a good deal?
You're not going to get many serious responses in TCL, like nightflyer said, check out the Mk4 forum, they'll be much more help re. this car. Personally though, I wouldn't buy a Mk4 with that many miles, and this is coming from a VW enthusiast.
autos are lame. Especially in a high mileage mkiv. Wait a little longer and find a 5 speed...or hell, even a 6 speed anniversary car.

Listen up, buddy, I've had both - I eat plain bagels with cream cheese all the time, and I know people who've brought me onion bagels to try. I've toasted them both. I've even had poppy seed bagels and bagels and lox with capers. I'll pit your onion bagel against my plain bagel with cream cheese any time anywhere, just meet me halfway.
There are many, many other options out there for $5k. Most of them are not ~120k mile examples of unreliable trash buckets of electrical component failure.

x2. It sounds harsh, but you'll be better served by passing on this car, and you'll be glad you did when you find something better later
I like things with 4 wheels and also things with 2 wheels.
It's a high mileage, automatic MKIV for christ's sakes. Why the hell would you want that so bad?

We know you have many choices when it comes to which online forum you like to be made fun of by for your asinine threads. That is why we here at The Car Lounge choose to make fun of you in ways others can't.

Flawless Victory statement right there. I wouldn't touch it.

Stop right there. Rigor? What, are you some sort of amateur? By the time rigor sets, you and your car need to be 2 states away. You always, always need plausible deniability. A stiff hooker is hard to explain, let alone 21.3. I'm all for a night of fun, but don't carry your souvenirs around until they are stiff.

We'll the reason i want it so bad is because my I currently have no car and It's very hard for me to juggle between my dads/sisters car every other day , so I need a new car. automatic/manual is out of the question. it HAS to be automatic, I don't have control over that, because i'm not the one paying for it.
my only concern is the tranny completely failing on me, then i would be car-less again. but lets say if the tranny went out next year sometime I would just have a transmission swap then.

Sounds like you need something that you can just buy and drive. Something that will not have lots of $mall problems. I would not pay 5k for a car with features not operational. I would stay clear of any used (especially modified) VW, unless you have some cash to burn and time to tinker. You could find nicely equipped cars for the same money with less miles and no problems. Good Luck on the hunt, My vote pass this over and keep looking
Foam gets ratty so people remove it. Mine is gone.
And for the record I love my car, no issues. Read the links above to make sure the tranny issue isn't going to get worse. But not having the fake shifting of the tip is no big loss, just keep it in D.
Whether an auto 1.8T with 120K miles is worth 5K depends on where you live. Look at a few other similar suspects in the autotrader like a 01-03 civic or a Sentra, also look at some Ford Focuses in that time period and see how it compares.

Sounds like you're about to make an emotional decision. Just to put it out there
High mileage, mk4 gti 1.8t automatic(not properly functioning) and you want it so bad because
A. You don't have a car now (been there, I know it sucks) B. You're probably being tempted by the fact that it's turbo, cheap, and probably not horribly banged up. C. You can "deal" with an automatic, but what about one that isn't properly working?
I'd say find something a little more solid. You can find older, turbo cars, 5 speed, known for being bulletproof if you look hard enough. Cars are the worst investments, and buying one with problems that's going to get a lot of use may not be the best idea in the long run. Just to warn you, I've spent around 5-6k on a car, only to have it crap out 6 months later, turbo leaking oil, valve cover gasket, coolant leaks, suffice it to say, 5-6k was NOT worth the half a year I got out of it before I had to start pouring money in again.
Also, the manual thing...I don't care what type of argument I start, but having a manual transmission will FORCE you to become a better driver. You will have to pay twice as much attention to what you're doing than in an automatic, and you have a good amount more control over what the car does in numerous situations. As far as your sister goes, teach/tell her to learn how to drive manual. Guys will find that really attractive and other girls will be jealous.
I would steer you away from MK4's as well. I have a few friends with them, and a Fiancee that had nothing but dumb electrical issues with them.
If you're looking for transportation and you just want to get around and you're going to get something with an Auto, I suggest a Focus ZX3 or Elantra GT Hatch.
My car isn't fast by any stretch of the imagination but it's not bad and the interior is really nice (with the GT package) and very comfortable. It's a great car.
You can find both the Elantra and the Focus for the same money with less miles and they will be a lot more reliable.
