No, not a bad idea. '04-08 RX-8s have a 100k mi warranty on the engine, everything is pretty stout overall otherwise.

You're right not to care about those issues - it's the rest of the package that makes the RX-8 truly appealing.

100k on the rotary eh? Was this standard from day one for all RX-8's or was this revised by Mazda?

It was revised last year.

Mazda was trying to build on the car's improving reliability reputation.

The 04, 05, and 06 RX8s also have a fairly complete "powertrain" warranty that covers engine mounts, transmissions, rear ends...

http://www.coremazda.com/tsb/r...n.pdf

But that's only 5 years/60k miles. So an 04 would probably be past that now (though mine is not). I actually forgot about that previous extension.... I need to have my car checked out before that warranty coverage is up (in few months). Hmm.

...because there were quite a few stories on the net about RX8 engine failures and such. Usually this type thing happens in reaction to owner concerns, and the internet has made such owner complaints heard by the owner base instantaneous now. It's a smart thing to do since it calms existing owners, which in turn probably helps keep the resale values up.

Do you know if the 100k mile warranty applies to the 2009 RX8 R3? I'm putting that on my list of future cars.

I test drove a new Mini Cooper S and I was not impressed by it at all. My 7 year old car feels faster and nimbler even though it's stock.
Overall I guess its just down to opinion. Anyway congrats on the awesome car purchase.

Yes.

But if having a extended warranty is that big a deal- just buy a better one (whole car not just drivetrain) when you buy the car. They are not that expensive. An oxygen sensor and some coils replaced would pay it back.

Yes. All of Mazda USA warranties follow the car.

I don't think it is a bad idea at all as long as the example that you buy has some service history and you can get a feel for the previous ownership.

I just sold my daily driver and would seriously consider one used since they are such relative bargains on the used market. Unfortunately SWMBO (She Who Must Be Obeyed) said her input is that I need to have something remotely practical since we don't have a good car for long trips with all of us onboard. I tried to force the "RX-8 and a trailer" theme but alas... I got nothin'.

And WHEN the Renesis engine does "die" you can always swap in an LS3 or LS2 and call it a day. THEN it would be a nearly perfect DD/toy.

I have a few friends that love the rx8's to death.
I have heard no issues with any of their cars.

Mind you, I am not a fan of the rx8 rotary. IMH but extremely biased opinion, I think that the rx7 13b-REW was a better design.
